Background info - 37 year old male, I've had UC for a little over 8 years, i was taking Colozal for the majority of the time, started taking Lialda about 8 months ago after changing GI doctor. My UC has always been mild, I've never had a flare up, and for the most part always had normal bowel movements.

about 2 months ago, I started noticing black specks in my stool, the stool was still brown, but the black specks were new to me. I was supposed to have a colonoscopy yesterday, but i was unable to get the SuPrep down, so it has been rescheduled for next Monday.

Are black specks normal in UC, i'm seeing a lot of conflicting info online. Thanks in advance

It's probably undigested food bits, examine what you ate over the last 2 days. I see them when I eat some seeds, also black beans, and other foods. Good luck on the prep and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the replies, but why would this just start happening after 8 years. In the last 2-3 years, I've made lots of improvements on my diet for the better, but in the last month or two, the black specks have started showing up regardless of what I eat.

Black specks could be from food, medication, or internal bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract (small intestine or stomach due to ulcers or infection). A few little specks doesn't cause a whole lot of worry, mostly black stools due. I would think an upper-endoscope could find the cause, but your symptoms don't warrant it.

Do you take any iron supplements or multi vitamins containing iron? That can cause it.
