It could be reflux, or even tightening or spasming of the esophagus. Of course, being referred to an ENT would be a good thing....a quick scope through the nose and into the esophagus can reveal many things if obvious initially.
I can relate to your symptoms, and reflux was revealed after I lost my voice for almost 4 months by my ENT.
Start there.....because your GI isn't doing enough. He should have sent you to an ENT already or set up an upper scope to actually see what's going on.
In the meantime, you could consider to try Zantac (which is an acid reducer, not a PPI) 75mg half hour before eating in morning and supper. That's what my GP had me use after the diagnosis, and it worked. She then had me use 150mg once a day at bedtime.
That way, you will at least see if it can help.
As imagardener stated, all possibilities need to be crossed off the list.
my brother in law and niece have esophageal constricting and spasming.....they have widening procedures done to help the same symptoms as you have.
