I think probably you need to test a lot to get a full idea, and even then, as you say, it is the stool sample which they say can differ a lot from the flora in the mucous layer. Comparing my sample though to a few I've found on blogs, it is not very diverse, which again they say is typical of UC the longer it goes on. These guys who are blogging about regular testing seem to show lots of difference according to what they have been eating or drinking etc.
A long time ago I did the Genova test which indicates levels of helpful bacteria as well as pathogenic and that was three samples over a week I think. I'd love to be able to afford to do that one, or one of the others like Great Plains regularly...but just too costly. :-(
