A few people on here have recently suffered through norovirus I believe along with their UC. Might want to avoid these in the future.

"Oysters not only transmit human norovirus; they also serve as a major reservoir for these pathogens, according to research published August 28 in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. "More than 80 percent of human norovirus genotypes were detected in oyster samples or oyster-related outbreaks," said corresponding author Yongjie Wang, PhD.

My great grandmother always said you should only eat oysters in months with an r in their name. If you eat them any other month you are risking getting very sick. I suppose there might be something to this after all.

I have not been able to trace norovirus to shellfish.
But I have had to stop eating steamed/boiled clams,and I love them.
When ever I eat them, and I have seen it happen about 5 times I get sever rectal abscess,
and these are not run of the mill, really nasty ones.
Clam chowder or clams casino, no problem,since longer time at temperature or higher temperature.
My theory on this is that when you steam a clams, you take them out just as soon as the shell opens.
I can guess that the temperature inside the clams gut, is not sufficient to kill what ever bacteria is in there,and the bacteria somehow survive the digestive system.
So I wont eat them anymore.

I used to eat oysters when I was a little kid with my dad....I grew up to hate them though and haven't touched them in decades. They're so gross lol!

I LOVE them. I go out and try all the different ones. I have gotten ill from them once, I think it was from them anyway, i threw up. I actually didn't start eating them until fairly recently. I figured I probably couldn't get too much worse than I was, hah. Now without a colon, who knows what could happen but at least my UC won't act up.

according to my GI its best to avoid all raw fish/eggs/dairy as our immune system is worse (if on meds that supress immune system) and also the pathogens that can be in them are much more dangerous for IBDers

I'm not sure if the oysters I ate with my dad when I was a kid were raw, they were in a can and they were smoked so I think they were cooked, you could chew them before swallowing, they didn't slither down the throat as we didn't eat them out of their shell...but I can't eat them, they gross me out lol.

The only time I ever ate oysters was I went out with a girl named Jennifer a few years back... she suggested we go to the Martini & Oyster bar try it out. I was like, "sure I'm all in" cause well, you know... any girl that want's to go down raw oysters and drink martini's... haha

I threw up like no tomorrow by the end of the night and called it quits. Maybe it wasn't the Martini's that got me after all.

Never got a second date outa that one.

I've had oysters a few times. The last time I had them was about 4 years ago. Later on that night I was really ill and throwing up. Thing was, my mum had the same starter of oysters and she was fine, so maybe it was just too much food and alcohol which bothered my digestive system.

I'm more paranoid about stomach bugs than I used to be - getting ****ing norovirus in the hospital straight after major bowel surgery does that to a person. Plus my bowels are in a right state anyway, and norovirus would tip me over the edge: I wouldn't touch raw oysters with a 10-foot bargepole at the moment.

How are you coming along after surgery? Are you still running into troubles and having a lot of pain and complications?

You know, I saw this thing on the news the other day about how much garbage is floating around the pacific. There are practically islands of trash. I know the ocean is big but it can't be a good thing for seafood, especially uncooked. I still want to eat oysters though. I will go back up to pb4's post - that will stop the desire.
