Heading to Cleveland clinic tomorrow for my two week stay, first week is to have a nutrient feeding IV to better prepare me for the surgery. The second week will be surgery and recovery. Very anxious, nervous, and excited. It's been almost half a year in this flare and as of late my symptoms have gotten a lot worse. I have external hemmeroids as well now that is causing me excruciating pain and won't heal due to the constant irritation all day. Will they be able to remove these for me prior to the surgery? Also, a question to anyone who's done the surgery, what was the biggest difference you noticed after waking up from the surgery? What was the biggest improvement you felt?

Good Luck-I hope all goes well. If the hemmies just popped up they may end up going away on their own once your aren't having all the trips to the bathroom. You can ask for some lidocaine cream which will help numb that area (was a lifesaver for me). Sitz baths can also help. When I am having a hemmie flare up I also use steriod suppositories but I have internal as well as external.

It's been a couple weeks now, using cream, nothing's helped. Just moving and walking hurts. Bathroom trips become that much worse now too. Once I no longer have my large intestine, will this become less of an issue?

I'm glad you are doing this. It is what you wanted and I hope all goes well.

I doubt they will want to operate on the hemmies because as soon as you have your colon removed and are not having BMs it will heal. But ask your surgeon.
The lidocaine cream is a good idea is it won't heal the hemmies but it will numb them so you are not in any pain.

Good luck, keep us posted. It'll feel wonderful, I am sure to wake up from surgery knowing uc is gone for good. Good riddance to the urgency, suffering, and quality of life limitations uc imposed.

I woke up from the surgery and I didn't feel sick anymore, there was a little bit of pain but I felt so much better. They had to do an open surgery on me, hopefully they can do yours laproscopically and you heal a little quicker than I did. There was a lot less pain then I expected. The toughest part was getting off of the Predisone and the withdrawal.

You will probably have to release mucus from the remaining small part of your colon about 1 time a day, it's all liquid so I'm not sure that it will effect your hemmies or not.

I can't answer your questions but I'm here to wish you well. I hope you have Internet so you can keep us posted. I'm glad your UC nightmare will be over and you're in good hands in Cleveland.

I meant to post before, seeing that you will be hospitalized for a few weeks I would give you some pointers I learned from my several weeks I spent in the hospital

-bring a charger with a long cord or an extention cord so you can charge your phone from bed
-bring comfy pjs/sweatpants/comfy tshirts and sweatshirts because hospital gowns get really uncomfortable
-bring depends or request when you get there (The hospital can give you) because you may feel yucky and you wont want to have 15 pairs of dirty underwear when you go home
- bring toothbrush/toothpaste/mouthwash/deoderantr as the hospital stuff is not so good
-bring shampoo/conditioner/bodywash as most hospitals use the three in one combo type
-charmin toilet paper for until your surgery and kleenex tissues (theirs are like sandpaper)
-moisturizer and chapstick as hospitals tend to be really dry
-water bottle that will be easy to drink from while laying down or a sippy cup because the pitchers or cups of water leak and sometimes you wont be able to sit up to drink
-mint gum because after IV fluids for a while you can get a metalic taste in your mouth

I wanted to add to Dikid's list.

A sleep mask and ear plugs so you can sleep after your surgery because you won't have to wake up during the night to use the bathroom...except for those pesky nurses that check on you at night. And blood draws at 5 am should be outlawed.
