Neanderthal (non-farmers) genes (possible grain intolerance) may have some connection to UC since many of us here have higher incidence of Neanderthal DNA (info from 23andme test). Lactose tolerance is something that developed late in our genetic history, lactose tolerance may have given some ancestors a competitive edge over lactose intolerant people although that trait survived. Obviously most people are tolerant of wheat, other grains and lactose.
In my case UC symptoms makes eating gluten/wheat and dairy very, very difficult and I'm better off without those foods.
Before UC all foods/drinks were fine with my gut but "something" happened and after that came multiple intolerances. Celiac testing says I'm not but when I quit wheat/gluten my UC bleeding stopped. 23andme says I am high probability celiac and high probability Crohns (diagnosed UC however). I believe what my gut tells me.
It's a many-page book but "Guns, Germs and Steel" spells out how and where farming evolved and how germs have shaped our human genetic past. Human pre-history is a hobby of mine and genes are fascinating.
