Mild UC, taking Asacol in the morning and before sleep, weird

My GI prescribed me Asacol 400mg 4+0+4.

I always kinda felt weird taking 4 pills in the morning and 4 pills before sleep, but not during the day. I didn't ask him why. Anyone have similar experience?

I ONLY take them twice a day. My original prescription was for 3x daily and I requested a change to 2x. That was over 26 years ago.

Why is it weird...it's a normal dosage regimen.

The only meds I would take 3x daily is antibiotics...otherwise, make it 2x daily. By the way, many people forget the mid day dosage so that's not a good thing.

Well it's weird because 4+0+4 means, every 8 hours. Except the second, mid day I don't take. So it's 4 pills at midnight and 4 pills at 8 in the morning, and nothing at 4 PM.

What's so important about the night that I should take it before sleep and only 4 pills in the morning for the ENTIRE day? Stomach works faster during the day and slower during the night, so it doesn't make sense.

Sulfasalazine on the other hand goes for every 8 hours the entire time, but my GI says Asacol without a reason or discussion. I even asked why, he didn't give me an answer.

I take it around 12 hours apart....basically.

It's not THAT important as to the exact time since they're released slowly into the colon. It has nothing to do with your stomach, basically....nor does sulfasalazine since the 5ASA is carried to the colon via the sulfa...then released.

Don't think of it like a systemic medication.
It also matters not with or without food.

Yes, I know... I wanted to say that your entire GI tract works faster during the day.

So basically it's not 4+0+4... it's every 12 hours.

So it doesn't matter whether I take it with or without food? It says that I should take it 1h before eating.

I was told no.....i take mine after eating in the morning. It works on its own merit of travel....they make their way eventually. Each one...not as a bunch necessarily.

If the one hour before eating works for you then stick with that schedule.

dont get hung up on the time. Unless you see them all in the toilet unopened...then you could take them with food to slow them down a bit possibly.
