Can someone tell me how long I can use two 1g pentasa enemas for? My GP says this dose is for short term? My specialist just said use two a day he didn't say for how long. I will ring tomorrow but just wanted an opinion in case I can't get on to him tomorrow. Tia

The dose is usually for 4-6 weeks and then taper off.

I still haven't been yet. Won't be until early next year. Ive been well, not sure why I wasn't told to taper. I'm feeling a little annoyed actually. Lucky for my GP who questioned how much of been using and for how long.

Pentasa enema can be used as a maintenance medication, indefinitely. It contains meslamine, a mild anti-inflammatory. In the states it's known as rowasa, and you'll see it in many of our signatures for maintenance.

I know of some who have used it daily for over a year....so the "usual" isn't actually true.

1g is very small dosage.

If you start tapering too soon, you'll be back on it nightly anyway.

How are you doing at this point on the 2 a day?

To me....you should have been put on a higher dosage from the start rather than the inconvenience of doing them twice a day. You're amazing to hold the day one without issues.

I haven't had constipation issues since using two a day. I haven't noticed any side affects from medication. I was just a little worried as both pharmacy and Dr stated this is not a maintence dose. My GI is five hours away so it's hard. I will be phoning him today. I don't have trouble holding them in but it's not fun having to use two a day.

It's not a maintenance dosage.
You could start tapering the day dosage to every second day...see how that goes.
