First of all. Thank you to whoever responds to this. This site has truely been amazing. I've never posted but read forums on here daily.

I was diagnosed with UC when I was 16 years old (now 28) I had a MAJOR flare up. when I was first diagnosed i was in the hospital for about a week. I was then put on prednisone IV and asacol. Things eventually got under control and I was fine for many years. Went threw college, ate what I wanted, drank all the time and was fine. about 4 years ago things changed I was out on Lialda which kept me in remission despite having a flare up once a year, mainly in the winter.

In the past 4 years I've started to flare more and more. I've been on prednisone 4 different times and this past time I did not respond at all. Symptoms came back full force this week. I'm starting remicade on Monday.

Currently I'm not sleeping through the night,going to the bathroom many many times, having stomach cramping and lots of bloody bm. My doctor today told me to start taking Tylenol 3 saying it may help with my symptoms.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can it really help decrease my symptoms of colitis?

It will help the symptoms but not help the cause of the flare. Tylenol-3 will slow down your intestines and help with some of the pain.

I would take it only as needed because it does have side-effects.

Remicade works great for many of us; it took me about 4 doses and only worked at 6 week increments with double doses but worked for almost 5 years. Remicade was great for me until I developed anti-bodies.

You may want to try steroid enemas to help your flare, it could help with the urgency.

Thank you so much for the fast response. Normally I do the cort enemas with it and it works wonders! Unfortunately, I've also been dealing with a fissure so I'm very scared to put anything up there right now. That's one of the most frutrsting things because I know it would help with my colitis 100%. I'm very excited to start the remicade Monday! I wish it was sunday night already!

Are you using a lubricant like petroleum jelly?

I'd try to take some Tylenol-3 about an hour before the enema and use some petroleum jelly on the tip of the enema. If you can tolerate it. If the enemas work great for you then you might want to try it. I know that they are not fun but they did work for me too.

I'm just worried about the fissure because it has yet to fully heal. I'm not sure what was worse. The pain from that or my colitis! I couldn't even sit down!

Here's my update. Took 1 pill at 830 last night and then again at 230 in the morning. It's definitely doing it's job in masking the symptoms! Woke up feeling like a million bucks and have yet to go to the bathroom since yesterday!

I had to google tylenol 3. Yeah, I take paracetamol (tylenol) and codeine sometimes. It really is great for symptom relief - better than anything else I've tried - but I don't take it every day in case I build up a tolerance to it. Also, I don't have an unlimited supply of codeine and getting hold of 30mg pills again will be very difficult.

Unfortunately it only masks the symptoms and does absolutely nothing to treat the underlying inflammation.

Day 2 update. Could not sleep through the night because of the prednisone. Makes me feel wired. However, woke up at 5am. Had a formed bowel movement and still feel good. Had blood but I don't expect that to disappear from this. No stomach pains or anything!

Codeine (an opioid) slows down your intestine and masks your symptoms. It doesn't heal your uc at all. My father (without uc) took oxycodone following a surgery and didn't poop for a week. He said he'd never take it ever again lol.

I took some Tylenol 3 for tooth pain. I will always appreciate it because it helped me so much... that tooth pain took up so much of my attention because it was so bad. This was a few years back, though. It was great while it lasted!
