Hi everyone, in a mild flare (5-6 bloody unformed bms with some pain). I have been doing hydrocortisone enemas in the morning and mesalamine enemas at night. I thought I was on my way to beating this one but the last couple of nights I have had vomiting with bowel movements. In the past, vomiting was a sign that things were going in the wrong direction.

I am just curious if others have experienced the same? Does vomiting spell trouble?

The next drug on my docket is envytio but I understand that it takes months to work? Just wondering if I should abandon the Remicade? My GI doesn't seem concerned but I have never responded to steroids so I cannot depend on it as a bridge if it comes to that.

yeah, things are really bad for me when i'm throwing up too. i can't help it at all. i always end up in the hospital for a long stay when it's coming out of both ends.

Ya I was afraid you would say that. The vomiting did coincide with starting the hydrocortisone enemas. Me and steroids don't get along.

But the house is clean :) got that usual steroid energy boost

Yeah, there was a period where I was in the bathroom all day, then throwing up all night. It wasn't long after that started that I landed in the ER. Throwing up is never a good sign.

I did vomit but it was not related to the severity of my symptoms.
It was that I got very nauseous and sometimes I could not control myself.

Vomiting could be from something else it can be from one of the supplaments or meds you are on.

I just wanted someone to say that vomiting doesn't necessarily = severity. So thanks, because I am still holding out hope that I can turn this one around.

The vomiting only happens when making a bowel movement. Because you know.....our dexterity needs to be tested once in a while. Everything coming out both ends always presents an interesting challenge.

The only meds I have changed is starting hydrocortisone enemas. I just wonder if it is possible for that to make someone worse? I seemed to see immediate relief from the hydrocortisone enemas and then the next day things turned the opposite direction. I have complained about this a million times already....steroids always make me worse.

I'd say it indicates a flare but is not necessarily indicative of severity. I've had many puking-during-BM episodes over the past few years and I've never landed in the hospital. Also I've never used HC enemas.

I keep a trash can next to the toilet with a plastic bag liner in it. If I feel like I'm going to throw up, I just pull the plastic bag of trash out & use the trash can.

thanks for the responses. I have my trash can set up in every bathroom. The problem is that I have two small children who insist on using mommy's puke bag as a second trash can. No. Mine! Get your own vomiting-while-pooping fun bag. :)

Hi there, sorry to hear about the vomitting. There are a Couple of supplements I can recommend but what does your diet look like at the moment? I don't want to suggest anything that will conflict.

Thanks Kevin. I have stalk piles of zofran for nausea. The problem is that this type of nausea is caused by the pain of a bowel movement. So there is no warning. As soon as stuff starts coming out one end....the other end wants to join the party.

I do find slippery elm helps. I think because it creates a barrier to let everything just slide on out. marshmallow root also does the same for me. What do you use?

I have a theory that I think the hydrocortisone enemas are reducing the mucous in my colon and then my poop is like a kid going down a water slide....except there is no water. More mucous to coat things may solve the problem.

I get nausea and vomiting when my flare is really bad and like bananagirl, it will land me in the hospital. It's a late symptom along with bleeding. Sometimes though, I will get a huge wave of nausea before I have the urge to poop...it's like a warning sign but not necessarily from inflammation. I have zofran at home but it doesn't help and my theory is because it's not treating the inflammation which is the cause of N/V.

I never vomit during flares. The only time I ever had stuff come up was before I was admitted to the hospital when I was first diagnosed. I was going 40+ times a day, all blood and became anemic. I was also collapsing several times a day. The doctors told me the vomiting had nothing to do with colitis symptoms directly.

Blimey, I think the only time I ever threw up from pain is when I had appendicitis. But I do know throwing up in pain absolutely sucks backside.

I hope you don't mind me offering a suggestion or two, these aren't cure-alls but they are really strong antioxidants. And the theory is that if you help ease the job of detoxification from the gut then it's free to heal. So in addition to you using slippery elm, etc. try adding 1g of Qing Dai (a dirt cheap Chinese herb you can purchase off eBay) on an empty stomach in the morning and on an empty stomach just before bed. Also the same drill but 15g wheatgrass powder. You can take both supplements one after the other but you'll struggle to mix them together so I wouldn't try that.

The pred enemas will obviously help reduce inflammation, hopefully the detox part will help get you over the edge. I used both to get of pred quite a while ago, hopefully you'll have a good response.

Yes, 12-14 weeks is common for a response time to entvyio, very, very slow working for a biologic medication.

I keep some Zofran in my bathroom where I can reach it and some water too, just in case.
I had bad experiences a while ago where my roommate didn't put garbage bags in the trash can and when I had to throw up I would see no liner and freak out. One can didn't make it and I yelled at that roommate for not putting stupid bags in there!!!

Sporty821 - I don't see how vomiting and colitis flares could not be related? I never vomit unless I am in a flare.

Kevin - thanks for the detox ideas. I do really well with fasting and have come out of flares from it but I had a hard time making it 3 days last time (headaches!) and cut it off at 2 days. The fact that I do well with fasting makes me think that any sort of detox remedy is going to help. I am a little scared of the Chinese herbs only because I don't know anything about them. I am seeing a herbalist now and will ask about that one. Do you know if it interferes with iron absorption? I have to be careful that I don't take anything that does. The anemia is pretty brutal as I am sure everyone knows.

iPoop - 12-14 weeks is just too long. I am assuming when most people go on it that they are also on pred.

Skyflyerjen- errrrrrr what we have to go through. Someday let's hope we can all look at a trashcan and not see a vomit bag.
