Scared to have take down after 1st step went very bad

Hi, I am new to this i. I had the 1st step of 2 for my j pouch surgery on Dec. 10. Due to ulcerative colitis It was supposed to be laparoscopic but I woke up with 35 staples. After 2 days they found out that I was allergic to the diladen pain pump that I had been pushing every 15 minutes. On the 3rd day they found out that I was allergic to the tropol antibiotic that I had been receiving through my IV. On day 4 after 4 days on severe nausia I had to have a NG tube put down my nose which is one of the worst things that I have ever been through them on day 5 my IV went bad and I had to have a pic line ran into me chest. My 4 night stay in the hospital turned into 8 days. Now I have been home for 2 weeks _and have not seen a home health nurse yet. My stoma is inverted so I had to figure out to use the aroma past in t the tube from YouTube. After all of this I am sacred to death to have the take down surgery. Any thoughts

Sounds horrific! I would be complaining and making a fuss! Where's the nurse at least! Time to kick arse???

Medical care around the holidays can be very inconsistent, I'd reach out to your surgeons' office and have them fix it. They wouldn't let me out of the hospital until they were certain that there would be a nurse at my house the first day I was home (on a Sunday, Columbus Day Weekend).

I had an open surgery too, it is sometimes necessary. My insurance company will pay for the scar revisions but I haven't felt like having another surgery just yet.

What kind of samples of ostomy supplies do you have? Do you have an convex wafers, they are the best type of supplies for retracted stomas. You may also want to try an ostomy belt.

Your ostomy supplier should have a support line that you can call for help.

Usually the take-down is a small operation with only a few day stay.

"samples" they told me that since the ostomy was for only for 6 weeks that I would have so many samples that I would be giving them away. Yet another thing that I have not seen. I called my surgeon and they are all out of the office until the 4th. They called me in some reflex for the infection that has set up causing a 100 degree fever every night. The only ostomy supplies that I have are the ones that I went and bought

That's freaking ridiculous, almost malpractice-like, I'd be all over their case. I'd call the hospital administration and ask for help.

Did you have an ostomy nurse at the hospital? I'd call that nurse and the nurses that took care of you in the hospital, maybe one of them can help you or get you to someone who could.

My insurance company was always calling me the first week or two after I was discharged to see if I needed any additional help, I'd try them too.

It's not good that you are discharged from a hospital after surgery and have a fever with no home nurse checking on you.

I'd be yelling at everyone that I could find with all the energy that I had. Tell them you have no supplies, no nurse and a fever.

You should also have a follow up visit with your surgeon within about -4 days of being discharged. This is ridiculous.

That all sounds very strange. I had surgery and everything was explained to me. I was never told I wouldn't need to buy supplies. I had a home health nurse who helped me after step 1. After that, I was able to order through a mail order pharmacy. I was allergic to the pain meds but luckily the allergy just made me itchy and nauseous and I was able to manage it with antinausea meds and benedryl. I was off pain meds after 3 days. Never had a fever. It was planned laproscopic and it was... It seems like you were sold a false bill of goods. I would consult with some other surgeons -- find the best colorectal surgeon you can, and possibly a lawyer to find out whether there is any grounds for malpractice.

I would definitely keep my hopes high for the reconnection. I know you've had a bad experience so far, but if you find a great surgeon, you should be able to safely continue to being free of the ostomy pouch if you so design. good luck to you!

Sorry you had such a bad experience. The care your received sounds awful. This may be easier said than done but perhaps go elsewhere for your reversal....different hospital and colorectal surgeon. The reversal surgery is the least complicated of all the surgeries. I had no issues whatsoever with my reversal.

All that paperwork that you signed going into surgery covers this, even though it was planned to be Laproscopic it can end up being an open surgery.

I had a very experienced CR surgeon at a major medical center in NYC, he is the Chief Surgeon for the entire Hospital. I went in with a planned Laproscopic surgery but my skin failed from the long term steroid use and they had to do it open. The surgeon was more upset about the open surgery than I was, I was just happy that my colon was gone.
