No way Marianne, thank you!

I know you've helped tons of people but you can't please everyone I guess. I don't know what I would have done without you being here. Since a long time ago, I remember you telling your story and letting people know life can be good after surgery, when the time came, it made it a little easier - just knowing that there are people who have been through it and live normal lives. Now, here I am without regrets.

I feel like I always preface surgery by stating that nothing replicates a working colon but that this is the best I was going to get - and I know there are others who are never going to get that working colon back. No one wants to believe it will be them, they think something will work... I am confident I had no chance to remission with the existing treatments. Not diet, nor supplement nor cactus juice was helping me either.

Can I chip in here?

Either surgery is a resounding success or it is not. No number of glib reassurances that surgery will change your life for the better, that your only regret will be that you didn't have surgery sooner, etc. etc. will change that. Personally I don't think it's morally right to promise outcomes that you can't guarantee, but nevertheless it's obviously the sort of thing people go in for. Me, I stick to hoping that people have a good outcome, not promising them that they will.

Another thing is that everyone on this board is at different stages of their journey and what one person might perceive as helpful encouragement, another person might perceive as overwhelming pushiness - DMC2011, like it or not, clearly felt the latter. I for one was devastated when my GI first told me I would need a colectomy - probably should have predicted it years earlier, but I didn't. My surgeon actually tried to get me to book surgery the first time I met her; it did feel like she was trying to push me into it and I refused. (She got the hint and backed off after our first meeting.)

When I was finally ready to book surgery, there was nothing anyone could have said or done at that point to change my mind. When I actually had surgery and it wasn't a life-changing experience, I was bitterly disappointed about that for ages afterwards. Luckily I learnt my lesson for my second surgery and, despite a far worse outcome, in many ways I've accepted the outcome much better. Maybe because I wised up and listened to nobody on the internet this time around. No ridiculous expectations to live up to.

Frankly if you actually need people's encouragement before you go ahead with surgery, then you're not really ready for it in my opinion. I made my decision to have my second surgery completely on my own - I wasn't even talking to my family at the time, so couldn't mull it over with them.

Marianne and NSSG - thank you both for sharing your experience! I loved reading your stories and felt better prepared from a mental standpoint going into my surgeries. I plan on keeping my blog up to help others out there who are running out of meds to treat their UC and are looking into j-pouch surgery. As you are aware, I am also a happy j-poucher.

NCOT - I am sorry you are not satisfied with the surgery you had for your Crohn's disease. Several of my friends have Crohn's disease and my heart goes out to them. Since you had a different surgery than I did and you have a different disease than I had, I certainly am not qualified to opine on your situation but wish you relief whether its through another surgery or meds.

Thanks again guys. I don't know why because I'm pretty tough skinned, but my feelings were very hurt in that one post yesterday. Some people are just mean spirited. I have put the offending member(s) on my ignore list. Not sure why I haven't done it sooner! Anyway, no one here knows how sick I was and I'll yell it from a roof top that this surgery helped me if it could help someone else. I NEVER said surgery was easy. It's darn hard and scary. But unfortunately for many people it's necessary. Happy you're both doing well after your tough journeys. :)

I'm all about having a good discourse but some of those posts by DMC crossed the line. DMC made a thread just to provoke, incite and insult you which is against the rules. Maybe some administrative action should be taken against DMC because this could happen again if it is not addressed.

3. No posts that attack, insult, flame, defame, or abuse others. Respect other members' opinions regarding treatment decisions. Decisions about health and well-being are highly personal choices. We should respect all points of view. Flaming will not be tolerated.

Marianne,

Besides using the ignore button there is an alert button right next to it that will notify the Admin about the posts, that is probably a more useful button and could help tone things down on some of these threads. They seem to be getting out of control.
