is there testing that can indicate which side of the family the IBD coomes from

Also there was a test my daughter took a few years ago that may incicate how her progression might be, I can't remember the name.
I'm wondering how much genetic information is there?

UC/CD is usually passed through the mother. In my family, almost all of the women's families are effected, it seems to stop at a male child. So if you have 2 children, a boy and a girl, most of the time the boy child doesn't carry the gene that causes UC/CD. This doesn't mean all the women will get UC/CD, but it does mean their children are at greater risk.

According to Dr. Kevin Rioux a researcher for IBD who did a study on the the inheritance and and genetics of IBD, if one parent (either mom or dad) has an IBD there is a 40-60% increased risk their offspring will also develop and IBD (either UC or CD) I've never heard anything at all about women with an IBD being able to pass the gene off easier than a man with IBD and it's likely because that isn't warranted to date. Bottom line, as long as one parent has it the risk for their offspring is the same, 40 to 60% chance of developing either CD or UC.

My mom had UC, I have CD, I got sick before my mom did, I'm the last of 6 kids and the only one that has an IBD so far, but that doesn't mean any of my older siblings are out of the woods 100% especially since my mom was in her mid 60's when she first became sick with her UC.

It's a 40 to 60% increased risk, I guess because they figure that anyone really is at risk for developing an IBD since still not enough is known about IBD yet....sadly! But an IBDer that has offspring, increase the risk to that offspring to 40 to 60% chance higher risk of also developing either form of IBD.

Fascinating in a weird way. Now mothers can feel guilty about infecting their children. And we UC'ers have someone to blame now. But there must be some genetic proclivity otherwise why wouldn't every child get IBD from the same mother passing the bacteria?

Thats not true! According to my GI, almost all his UC/CD patients have a family history and he has over 300 patients. As for anyone feeling guilty, thats nonsense we mothers have enough to deal with already. Whether it's women or men, there is a much higher risk of our children having IBD that people who don't have it-thats a fact.

Mom's bacteria is the primary source of early microbes, and infants from c-section lack some important microbes.

But this does not IN ANY WAY diminish the genetic contribution. There are multiple and complex causes. Having alleles linked to IBD and having underpopulated gut microbes would be a double wammy - but neither one by itself is THE CAUSE.

Also the microbes colonies in mom will be related to both her diet and genetics, and lifetime exposures. So there are also indirect genetic effects operating through transmission of maternal microbes.

No one is diminishing the genetic effect, certainly not me. It seems the urge to attack on this forum is the first thing that comes to mind, Simple minds!

Well, I blame my mom for everything that's wrong in my life, she passed her IBD on to me, she was mean and abusive and nothing was "motherly" about her, she was basically like a mean nanny, she cooked and cleaned and was abusive, we got the bare essentials for survival but lots of verbal and physical abuse (and she wasn't even sick yet when she was really mean) so in my case I think it's okay for me to blame my mom for a lot of my issues.
