Yes, constipation is a normal side-effect of starting steroids: I had it a few times. I remember my brother (who also has Crohn's, albeit in the form of proctitis) talking about becoming constipated, then having a dreadful urge while driving - think he had to pull up into a garage to go.
I'm the opposite of nssg in that I preferred diarrhoea to constipation, but my diarrhoea was easier in the days when I still had a colon and more severe/extensive disease, ironically enough. My rectum was largely unaffected, so I was spared the misery of tenesmus, extreme urgency, passing tiny bits of stool 20x a day, etc. (Some of those things did become more of an issue as time went on, but urgency was never something I had a serious problem with until after surgery.)
The constipation will sort itself out once you start to taper the pred.
