Went to the Dr. yesterday, as an emergency.. I was peeing blood and going every five minutes with severe pain. Dr. tested my urine in the office- results.. A urinary tract infection. Put me on an antibiotic. Last time I was put on an antibiotic for a sinus infection... last June to be exact.. Two weeks later.. Boom.. major UC flare..which I still am treating .. I know if I start an antibiotic for the UTI.. I will be in a severe flare again... Currently am on Prednisone and Lialda, and still have slight blood in my stool.

I know if I don't treat the UTI.. It is dangerous and I am still in a lot of pain and have urgency to pee, constantly..
Any suggestions????

Add cranberry supplements and/or juice. I know it helps me. I'd also add probiotics. Now you're flaring so you really have nothing to lose. Take the antibiotics. Maybe talk to your GI about upping your UC meds also.

Since you are on pred, do the antibiotics and take a cranberry supplement such as Cranrich. Add a rectal mesalamine enema for sure.

Are you talking any probiotics?

My vote is take the antibiotics. Peeing blood is never a good thing...

Some antibiotics are easier on UC than others? Which one are they going to prescribe?

I'd load up on probiotics, I'd probably go with a combination of Florastor and Culturellle at a high dose.

Don't take the probiotics at the same time as the antibiotic because it will just kill the probiotics, you need to space them out.

Double your probiotics while you're taking the abx and for a week or two after you finish them. Antibiotics usually give me severe diarrhea (not a UC flare, just antibiotic diarrhea) within 24 hours. To try to control this, I ask my doc for a prescription for Lomotil to take with the antibiotics.
