Just diagnosed

I was just diagnosed 5 days ago with UC. I have a lot of questions but mostly I would like to know if anyone else has had these same symptoms. Everything was normal until 5 months ago, to the day. I was out for lunch with a friend, our regular restaurant, my regular meal. I couldn't finish my whole meal which was not normal but my whole stomach bloated so much that it actually broke the zipper on my pants. I was in discomfort for several days. Then came the pain. I was in such severe pain in my left lower abdomen that I went to emergency. They found a cyst in my left ovary and inflammation at my ileum with a CT scan.they sent me home with dilaudid and to follow up with my family doctor. Along with the pain I started vomiting several times a day (between 4-8) and had no nausea with it. A month later I had my ovary and tube removed. My gastro appointment wasn't for another 2 months. After the surgery nothing changed. I was in severe pain, vomiting several times a day, I could keep tea and a piece of white bread down a day. It got so bad that I had to go off work. I have lost over 50 pounds to date. I had a colonoscopy last month and just got the results this week of having ulcerative colitis. During this time I have never had diarrhea, never felt constipated, as I haven't been keeping food down my BM are about one and every ten days. My doctor put me on Mezavant which I cannot tolerate it has given me severe heartburn and severe pain just below my ribs on my back and i have been vomiting even more then my normal. Is there another medicine that someone can recommend? And do any of these symptoms sound normal my family doctor doesn't seem to be much help as I cannot get in to see her

I wish I could give you a little more advice, but I think you need to get another opinion. Not much of what you describe would definitely lead me to think it's related to the UC. Other than the colonoscopy results, the symptoms could indicate a lot of things. I can't even think what you would take to treat it until you find out exactly what you're dealing with.

Vomiting with UC is not impossible, but it's also not a symptom more people have. Weight loss is common, but mostly, we have a lot of diarrhea, cramping, bloody stool, pain, loss of appetite, urgency, frequent trips to the bathroom, pressure, feeling of being unable to empty...

Have you had your urine tested? Blood in urine isn't a good thing as I'm sure you know. You could be in a ton of pain if your having kidney issues.

That's interesting. A sign of a UC flare up can be a high WBC. Have you had stool tests? perhaps you have a GI bug? Many things can cause high WBC, but usually it is infection related, I am surprised your doctor wasn't insisting on running panels to attempt to find the source.

Quite a few people do not tolerate Mezavant when it really comes down to it... The problem is that your symptoms don't sound really in-line with a UC flare up, so it's hard to think you should treat them with UC drugs - though the pathology report would indicate that you need to treat the UC. Do you have more info on your results? Where was the inflammation active? how active? You can request a copy of the pathology report from your GI's office.

Could you have a stone or something along those lines? It sounds to me like you need to see someone else, perhaps a urologist or OBGYN (or both). You should do more blood tests for the increased WBC. Blood in urine is very concerning and it's not the specialty of a GI doctor.
