Hey everyone,

So I haven't had a flare up in over 4 years, and I believe in those 4 years it started once, but I immediately started to take Medimucil. Which helped. NOW. I've was under major major stress at the end of Feb, a bunch of unfortunate things happened, which caused my stress and anxiety to SPIKE. So when I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy back in maybe 2010, they said I was fine, That I had IBS. Cool. Now back to today. I started flaring up feb 27th. Today is Sunday, I haven't been able to eat or drink anything since Wednesday. At first it was the bowel movements, then they start getting fluffy, then diarrhea. Blood in my stool. Can't keep ANYTHING down. My stomach wants me to dry heave until my diaphragm is in my throat. Just moderate-insanely intense pains all day. I would say I puke atleast once every hour, if not more. I went to the hospital on Friday night, they gave me 2 bags on IV, and 4 different gravols, which barely did anything. Sleeping is horrible too. I wear a fitbit so it tracks my sleep, I've been averaging a couple hours of sleep a night, broken sleep, stomach wakes me up for an hour, try to get back to sleep and the same thing will happen.

The worst flare up I had was I think 2008. I lost about 30 pounds, I was sick for almost 12 weeks, It was brutal, and that was quite some time ago so I can't remember EVERY remedy I thought worked!

I have to wait and see my GP this week, but the ER doc said it was colitis. I had blood work, a few times actually that night, urine, and CT scan. So hopefully I can see the GP tomorrow with a firm answer.

If anyone has experienced this, and/or knows what I can do to help it not be so painful, any help would be much appreciated.

First thing to do is get tested for C. diff although that does not explain blood. Sounds like you have a bug complicated by IBS.

Second, make your diet the least difficult for your gut. Eat no fiber, cook all low fiber veggies (spinach esp. good), make homemade chicken or turkey soup and drink it several times a day. It's called a "low residue diet" and well known to medical pros. (I skip white bread, saltines and rice because my gut hates those).

Try taking a Bendryl at night to help sleep. It is an antihistamine and has always calmed my gut down. Don't take daytime because it makes you sleepy and not fit to drive.

Drink water to stay hydrated and take Immodium to stop excessive bowel movements. If you become constipated DO NOT take Immodium or anything binding (like cheese).

Once you get a little better you need to start a food diary and see what foods aggravate your IBS. No one can do this except you although many people have trouble with gluten and dairy. My food list is extensive but yours will be different.

PS "Colitis" is not a reliable diagnosis unless you had a colonoscopy at the hospital. Your GP will order a c-scope if you haven't had one done since 2010. When you get an updated c-scope get a copy of the report and ask questions here and of your doctor to understand your exact diagnosis. C-scope is the gold standard for making a diagnosis. IBS is a diagnosis of "exclusion" meaning if they can't see anything going on then that's what they'll say you have. Blood could be from hemorrhoids which the scope doc should be able to see.

Bug complicated by ibs would be the best case scenario. He did say I had some sort of infection. I will definitely take the steps I need to get better and stay better.
