Constant Infections whilst on Remicade

Hi All,

It's been a while since I've posted on this site! I had extremely severe UC for 3 years before Remicade put me into remission after trying and failing every other alternative from medication to alternative medication to diets. The first 18 months of being in remission were bliss. However, the last 18 months, I have had endless infections. Right now, I have around 7 infections - mainly fungal and yeast related. I feel so sick with all of these constant infections I'm considering coming off Infliximab or else starting back on SCD to see if this helps clear it up. For example, I have had for the last 18 months, a scaling peeling ear infection at the back of my ear affecting the skin. I have a peeling nose infection, proximal subungual onychomycosis toe infection etc etc etc. These infections are definitely the lesser evil compared to UC but it's really getting me down lately and affecting my confidence and my relationship.

Any advice would be comforting :-)

Can you try another biologic? Perhaps you would do better with humira or simponi. Even more likely, entyvio since it's gut specific. I had a major infection while on remicade so I can understand why you're getting frustrated. I wonder if there is some kind of prophylactic you can take to keep things in check? Have you tried an infectious disease dr? I know it sounds crazy, but mine was SO good with this exact thing. Preventing infection while on other drugs or immune suppressed. I had surgery and i am 100% medfree, but I would give that a shot if you really want to continue with remicade.

How is your blood work? WBC? Have you tried a strong probiotic like VSL? I feel for you. Yeast infections anywhere in the body can make you feel like crap. Have you contacted your primary care? Mine proscribes diflucan when I get yeast problems. The stuff works great.

The infections are difficult and do not underestimate them. They can cause serious problems-trust me here. I agree that Entyvio might be a good answer, but you may build antibodies to Remicade and that will be the end of that. Perhaps they can adjust your dose of Remi and add something else to hold you. Just a thought to get you through.
