Surgery was a success. Pain level 10+

The surgery was a success. My colon is gone. Surgery took 4 hours had a mishap with the urine catheter - false passage. One thing that is shocking is the Pain. I awoke to the worst abdominal pain I have ever had in my life. Even with the extreme pain meds It literally hurts to even breathe or move. They have me on a pain pump Dilaudid on an 8 minute button.However I was able with some extreme effort and help to walk from the bed to chair last night.(Doctors orders) It was good to get out of bed regardless. Did you guys experience this much initial pain after surgery? I hope and pray the Pain begins to decrease today. On the bright side I did not have to run to the bathroom this morning.

I had an epidural for my colectomy and it worked pretty good in keeping my pain levels from 3-4.

I would be insistent on getting the pain under control.

When I had my j-pouch created the pain pump broke and I wasn't getting any pain meds for a few hours, that was a 9. They got it fixed.

Yes, I had a lot of pain after the first step. I think part of the problem was the fact that I didn't know what to expect. Once I got things figured out with the pain team, things were much easier. I had a nerve blocker to my abdomen, which helped a lot too. Muscle relaxers can help if you use them on top of the pain pump. I was off the pain meds really quickly. I have bad reactions to opiates so my goal was to be on very minimal drugs when I left the hospital. It worked out well for me. The first few days are really tough, then it got so much easier. Steps 2 and 3 were much easier for me. Good luck!!!!!
