Ugh. I was always so lucky to be the odd one that had constipation with UC. Well it suddenly switched on me. My GI is on vacation. It's not the diarrhea that bothers me. It's the horrible cramping pain. I'm suffering so bad. If I get the slightest bit nervous or anxious, bang. I'm doubled over in pain. My GI's Doctor working for him this week prescribed me the meslamine enemas. I am taking lialda with it. I was doing the canasa suppositories. They just didn't help. Ugh. I hope this is over soon. I'm so weak. I swear sometimes I'm about to pass out on the toilet. I'm exhausted and this hurts. I hope it gets better :/ and I'm only 20 ugh.

You do need stool tests for c-diff. Sudden symptoms like this with pain are often not just UC.

How much Lialda?

So very sorry to hear of your condition and despair. Many of us have lived this too so have great empathy.
It sounds like you need some stronger medication! Can you go to another GI for second opinion? Have they done lab work? Could they do a colonoscopy to see what's going on?
If I were in your shoes, I'd also dramatically simplify diet. I did liquid shakes only for a while for bowel rest, for example.
Hoping you can get some better support through this time of despair. You posted in the right place, as we can tell you this is temporary until you get better help.

When does the horrible cramping pain occur? Is it during bms? Randomly? This makes me think of muscle spasms within the large intestine (very painful) and those can be treated with prescription anti-spasmatics that your gastroenterologist can prescribe. In the meantime, I'd highly recommend a hot water bottle (or heat retaining pad) on your abdomen when pains occur, it greatly helps.

I'd give the mesalamine enemas couple weeks to show improvements and ask for corticosteroids if things get worse. Severe flares usually warrant prednisone, uceris, or a steroid enema.

We've all been there. My worst flare was 20+ bms a day, sharp knife stabbing pains, the works. It sucks that any one of us need to suffer like that due to uc symptoms, worse yet that we all do during bad flares.

This sounds a bit like the flare I had several years ago.

For me, almonds became the rescue. I know almonds might be a problem for some with UC, so if you normally react on almonds do not try.

If you are able to handle almonds, try to eat just almonds and some safe veggies, nothing more for 2-3 days. Chew the almonds really, really well. For me, almonds are reducing the bloating a lot and together with it the cramps. Also it stabilizes the poop.

Cramping is my #1 symptom when flaring so I completely understand. I don't mind diarrhea either but the cramping is the worst. If you're not getting better with the enemas, call the doc back and I'd actually call now to be tested for cdiff to rule it out since you usually have constipation. If you can't stay hydrated, go to the ER for fluids. Eating isn't as important as being able to hydrate yourself. When I'm flaring, I can't even drink water.

Yep, stay hydrated with electrolyte enhanced water. Eat lightly. Not sure about any nuts or seeds if you are flaring. They can get you a RX if the pain is too much. Opiates slow down the bowel and can provide relief for a small amount of time. Find out who your GI is using as a back up during her/his vacation. You need a specialist as they will probable give you a steroid to get this under control.
