Would you take a biologic if you have close family with Multiple Sclerosis?

I have and will continue to do my own searching into this, and will make my own decision, but I am just curious what others think.

My GI doctor wants me to start a biologic as i've begun flaring again after giving birth to my son, and was flaring for a year prior to pregnancy. I have been on azathioprine for a little over a year, and was only in remission during my pregnancy. So it seems it might be time to start a biologic.

However, they terrify me due to the relation with MS diagnoses following treatment, along with other neurological disorders.
My dad has MS, and my brother also has other auto-immune neurological/neuromuscular diseases. Thus, I worry I would be at higher risk for developing such conditions, if I were to take a biologic.

I think I would rather jump straight to surgery rather than risk a lifelong devastating illness, especially since I am only 33 and just had a baby.

My previous GI doctor agreed that I should never go on Remicade due to the risk of MS, and I think my new GI doctor agrees, however she mentioned wanting to put me on humira. I know its a newer drug than remicade, so there are not as many cases, but I believe we are starting to see a similar link as with remicade. So I think I will deny starting Humira.

So now I am trying to decide between giving Entyvio a try or holding out until I give up and get surgery. I worry that with Entyvio being so new we could very well start to see the same link with MS and other neurological disorders once time goes on.

If I did not have the close family with MS and other autoimmune neurological diseases I wouldn't hesitate to try any biologic. But I'm just not sure I should risk it in my case.

Does anyone else have any thoughts to share? Anyone in similar situation or with similar fears?

But ya, it is a little comforting (and tempting) knowing Entyvio has a different mechanism.
I'm not sure we know exactly why remicade and humira have a link with MS, etc though. But I believe entyvio does also list neuropathies as possible side effects, although that is not the same thing as an autoimmune neurological disease.

The remicade website itself also mentions the association between TNF inhibitors and CNS demyelinating disorders.

There is no actual study. Every patient that takes Remicade or Humira, etc. is tracked for side effects and effectiveness.

As correlation does not equal causation it does not necessarily mean that remicade causes MS (it might be completely unrelated), but there might be risk (although still very rare). Not enough is known about it or what mechanism might cause the increased risk. That is why it's worrisome.

Yes I would and yes I did. My sister has MS and she was dx before I started on remicade. I did experience neurological side effects after the loading doses of humira and was worked up for demyelinating disorder and small fiber neuropathy but inconclusive. Essentially I have neuropathy in my feet. It's a risk but rare.
