I decided that I don't want any kids and I went to my gyncologist last Monday. I brought up that I want a sterilisation but she didn't like the idea of me having abdominal surgery. She suggested the cooper IUD.
On the one hand I look forward being hormon-free and increasing my libido. On the other hand I had a past of infections and inflammation down there. My gyn knows about
this and treated me for it. She even randomly called me to check how I was doing which I really appreciated. Anyways, since it's reversible I will just give it a try.
I don't want children because I don't think my body can handle it. I know that Azathioprine is now considered safe during pregnancy but I know that even after pregnancy I would have difficulties taking care of a child. I'm constantly fatigued and I get easily overwhelmed. Another thing, 23andme is showing that I'm a Tyrosinemia carrier and I don't want to pass on my bad genes. I don't know if that's selfish but that's just my thinking.
I have the appointment on August 2nd. Wish me luck.

Good luck! Don't feel bad about
justifying your choice, we all do what we feel we have to do to survive. Insertion is pretty intense, FYI, I was well prepared for it but still found it "unpleasant" to say the least. At least it was quick when I had my Mirena inserted.

I think it's worth trying too. I am loving not worrying about
taking pills. I actually think what you're describing is the opposite of selfish, it's very selfless to think about
what you have to give, so far as physically and emotionally and to have concern for passing along traits that might not be beneficial... Of course, you should do what you want, everyone has some bad traits...

Andrina-please don't see it as selfish .
I take it as Selfless - because you are sacrificing yourself to save another human's struggle. If it's with me I will be doing the same as I cannot handle my own child suffering because of me.

It always blows my mind that other people might consider someone's personal decision not to have children as "selfish". Please don't ever feel that way. It is your life to live as you see fit.
I also have made the decision to not have children and for very similar reasons. My husband does not want children either and he is going to be getting a vasectomy soon. I am on oral birth control but with my active UC I often worry that it is not effective. Not that I have any sex drive to speak of when I'm feeling so ill and gross all the time.

Consider the Mirena for women who have not had childbirth. It is called Skyla. The copper IUD can cause heavy bleeding.

Thank you all for your kind responses.
Emma I'm aware that bleeding might be heavier but I also read that it will regulate itself after 3-6 months. My point is to be hormon-free. I'm currently on the nuvaring and it's good and all but I don't have a sex drive whatsoever and like to get it back.

I have a mirena. Apparently there are meds that can help relax your cervix for easier insertion. Unfortunately my doc didn't tell me about
them. If you have a far drive home maybe have someone with you because I didn't think I was going to make the 5 mins home I was so uncomfortable, but it eased off a lot with heat packs- have them ready! And guess what, I will proudly admit I am selfish for not wanting kids but also darn smart for knowing myself well enough that it's too big if a decision to bow to peer pressure to.

yes, the drive home was bad for me too. No one told me there would be cramping. It did subside, but it took a while, like hours... You will be okay, you said you're going to take something to relax you. I was off the hormones for a while and I did not get my drive back unfortunately. I'd do just about
anything to get mine back - I don't know if I am missing the drive or missing the mystery, excitement, fun...

I have my husband who'll drive me. And they'll give me meds. I still need to call them and ask for the dosing and how early I should take them. I got the cervix stuff which helps insertion and she gave me Valium.

A friend of mine had one and after a month she was getting. Really dry skin and started breaking out like crazy. It was so bad her doc had to put her on medication because her ski was literally peeling off. The dermo said she's seen a few people lately have bag reaction. As soon as she got it out, it cleared up right away. Really weird side effect but I figure it's worth mentioning.
On the other hand, my sister in law had one for a few years and loved it. No probs whatsoever. Good luck with the procedure!

Another issue that should be mentioned is that Mirena has been getting some bad press about
organ perforation and ectopic pregnancy. I know one woman who lost her baby and needed an emergency surgery. She lost her ovary as well.
I don't have a lot of info about
that IUD, like percentages of having issues, etc. But you should know, though. Good luck! I hope you find something that helps you.
