Going back on vacation at Hospital - Surgery#2

The ol man is heading back to the Hospital for surgery#2 this Thursday morning. Last day at work for a while. I told my co workers I was going on vacation at the Hospital again. Its all inclusive, room and board, pain, meals, pain, 24 hour care and support plus pain... This is me trying to be some what sarcastic and positive through an attempt at humor. All jokes aside oddly so far I think the worst thing Im dreading is choking down the bowel Prep. Hope everything goes smooth, I will be a the halfway mark after this one. Be glad when surgery #3 is done. Appreciate the support over the last few months...

I used that same line, I'm going on vacation. Actually my hospital room was pretty nice and I had a view of the East River in NYC. If I shut the door to my private room it really didn't feel like a hospital. The food was awful, I would have left a bad review in TripAdvisor about the food but the service was nice.

Good luck tomorrow, the prep for this surgery is much easier than when you had your colon. I was out of work for 6 weeks after my 2nd surgery.

Also you may need different Ostomy supplies because you have a loop ileo. I had to use a convex wafer for my loop. I'd recommend asking a lot of questions to the ostomy nurse about the loop and how to manage it.

Best of luck to you. It will go great I am sure. I actually rebounded really quickly after step 2, it is an involved surgery, but I knew what to expect from surgery 1, and I knew how to minimize the pain level, how to get around quickly... Keep your eyes on the goal - 8 more weeks until you're done with all 3 surgeries :)

Well the Doc succeded in removing the rectum and creating the jpouch. Only thing is I had a complication. He had an issue geeting the loop ieoostomy\stoma to stay attached to the outside - had to insert a bridge on the stma and a NB tube(tube from my nose to stomach to drain stmach contents) I am scheduled to get both out on Monday. Anyone ever go through this? The tube is giving me the hicups and belching been real challenging with my sore abdomen. Doc thinks I will be able to go home wednesday, so far all I have been eating is ice chips and still geeting IV meds. Thanks for the support.

I don't know about the stoma issue but the NG tube I'm very familiar with. They are generally inserted till your bowels wake up and things start functioning properly. Without the tube there's a good chance you'll vomit bile which is no fun. The tube is uncomfortable and you may develop some throat irritation if it's rubbing. The tube comes out very fast. I've never been awake during the insertion thank god. The hiccups are more than likely due to your bowels not being awake yet. I had terrible hiccups after all of my bowel surgeries, even with no tube. My surgeon had given me a drug called Reglan to help wake up the bowels and help with the hiccups

good luck, how did he go with the first 2 surgery's?? pain wise??? always in the back of my mind?

I am on day 4 at home from hospital. Spent 7 days in hospital. Day 10 post sugery #2. The pain this round I would say was worse with the NG tube. I was fortunate they let me have dilodin via push button for 5 days then iv shots. Im now on norco pills at home. Worst part was the nasea I had after the ng tube was removed. Took a few days to get better. It was odd my sense of smell was increased after the tube removal. I could smell everything and it all stunk... i think this may have been the real nasea issue. Hard to say for sure. Im still really tendor and sore but improving each day. One surpise is the lack of rectal discharge. Im actually getting worried about it not happening. Another challenge has been watery ostomy output. Im on imodium and fiber con pills x3 a day to thicken it.

The loop is notoriously very liquid. It's just the way it is so don't let that worry you. The Imodium will help with that. I didn't like the Imodium because it would turn my output to a glue like paste that was impossible to empty out of the bag. I actually preferred it liquid. Be sure to keep hydrated.
