Until you find the right treatment or combination of treatments, you flare indefinitely. Flares can last weeks, months, a year, and multiple/many years. We've had some users flaring for many years.
So, theres no specific "it's only safe for X number of days/weeks/months/years". Certainly flaring has a number of negative symptoms and a negative impact on our bodies. Ideally, you want to keep flares as short as possible, but often each new treatment might take a couple months to work and show results if it's going to. The reality is you might have to try several separate treatments over a number of months to find your solution.
Flares can cause uc to spread in extent and severity. Prolonged flares increase colorectal cancer risks compared to those in remission. Usually prednisone is used to take the worst out of the flare (take away the inflammation and symptoms), while new treatments are given time to work, and then you taper to see if it works.
I'd give a new treatment several months time. It's either going to work or not. You then move on to the next treatment.
