I never had gas before getting UC, but horrible gas became a way of life making me run to toilet because it was untrustworthy. In remission I get gas only from ice cream and fruit so am sure there's missing bacteria that would normally deal with this.
Wonder if gas production is genetically linked because I don't remember it ever being something our family had and I have brothers so you'd think it would've been noticed
Women of course never fart haha.
edit to add this info:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK417/"Only one out of three adults consistently possesses the strictly anaerobic bacteria capable of producing significant quantities of methane. This capacity appears to be a familial phenomenon, unrelated to dietary factors. The offspring of two methane producers have a 95% chance of being methane producers. If only one parent produces methane, the offspring have a 50% chance of producing methane. If neither parent produces methane, there is a less than 10% chance of the production of methane by the offspring. This familial tendency appears to be environmental rather than genetic and results from colonization of the colon with methane-producing bacteria early in life, such as by contamination during the actual birthing process or by contact with other family members during infancy."
So gas can be both genetic and environmental, you can "acquire" aerobic bacteria that produces methane gas.
You can also inherit it. Interesting that methane gas is unrelated to diet.
