Everything you've described are classic steroid side effects, don't blame yourself for wild and unpredictable emotions ranging from anger, anxiety, fears, crying, paranoia, etc. Bloating and an insatiable appetite that leads to weight gain are common steroid side effects. You can limit the bloating by limiting your salt intake. The side effects aren't preventable for the most part (there's only a few certainties in life: paying taxes and prednisone side effects), but it does get better as your dose lowers. They're temporary while on steroids. Certainly try to catch yourself when you suspect your emotions are going wild, explain to your boyfriend that the medication is causing them. We had a forum member give their spouse a cake after finishing prednisone that was shaped as Frankenstein that read: sorry I've been such a monster lately. We've all been there, can sympathize, and relate.
Essentially, corticosteroids emulate our body's natural "fight or flight" chemical called cortisol. If we're injured our body produces lots of adrenaline and cortisol to help us survive. Corticosteroids are unnaturally high amounts of this chemical. The reason we take them is it has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, reduces bleeding, and lowers our immune system attack. However, we get everything a fight or flight chemical gives us, many of which are undesirable.
