Remission caused by TB antibiotics?

I've been taking TB antibiotics for latent TB as a precursor to starting a biologic for the first time. Pretty much steroid dependent and flaring on and off for 5 years, despite AZA.

Here's the thing... these antibiotics (Iziodaid) seem to have toppled me into the most perfect remission imaginable. No other explanation makes sense.

Anyone else heard of this!

Yes. There are numerous threads on the forum about the possibility that UC is caused by bacteria Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP is closely related to the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

BTW antibiotics have jump-started me into remission more than once.

Out of curiosity how long is the prescription for? As well, for you, there is a lot of info on the following site: thecrohnsinfection.org - but it is mainly for Crohn's patients. You may find it interesting to read through.

That being said there is one person on the UC board that is enrolled in a trial for the new RedHill Biopharma trial of anti-tuberculosis (anti MAP) antibiotics for his UC. However I am not sure how he is doing and am not sure if he is really allowed to say.

Anyway, congrats again on the quick remission. That must feel amazing after suffering for so long.

its possible you have tb infection causing the bowel inflammation
gold standard would be biopsies, may take several weeks to get results

What kind of antibiotic is iziodaid? I can't find anything about it on Google?

Try this spelling. It is also an analog of vitamin B6, can cause liver toxicity, plus other side effects.

crap they knew this in 1954 that it does something for UC
not too much else out there but have not done comprehensive searching.

Thanks for all your responses and sorry for mis-spelling the anti-biotic! I'm on it for 6 months. And yes it is pretty hard on the liver.

I'm of the view that we all have infections of some sort - not necesssarily the same ones. It would be incredible if I could maintain this remission after the course ends, without the need for a biologic. But I'm skeptical...

Well at least you found something that works for you. That is always amazing regardless if it biologics, abx, topic or natural. Gives you a well deserved break and some extra freedom in life I would imagine.

Always nice to read good news and success stories on here.

I've been on antibiotics twice since being diagnosed. Both times my fragile remission (watery stools) turned into full normalcy. My GI said they see this in some UC patients but the UC always returns when the course of antibiotics is finished, which has been my experience. But it's led me to conclude dysbiosis is my main problem now. But my GI just shrugs when I suggest it.

I have been able to prolong remission by months after taking antibiotics by monitoring my diet for food triggers and taking probiotics every day. I also take some glutamine powder each day for a week or two afterwards to help repair my colon.

Hmmm... so I guess this means I should start a biologic even though my gut is better than at any time since 2006. I get that flaring again is highly likely. Would just love to hear a story or two of someone who got better forever!

My gut also likes most antibiotics (not all) and behaves very well while on them. However I strongly suspect Ciprofloxacin played a part in my getting UC so they aren't all the same, at least for me.

Now that you are in remission perhaps a med milder than a biologic is sufficient to stay in remission.

Anti-TB meds got me out of a particularly stubborn 8 month flare and it's a remission too. I was given the antibiotics which included Rifabutin and two others (can't recall) for two weeks prior to starting FMT and within a few days of starting them the bleeding had stopped and I was in the start of a remission by the time I started the FMT, which got me into a remission for about a year the first time.

Did you experience night sweats as one of your symptoms? Not all Ucers have that problem but I sure did. Night sweats are also common in tuberculosis. Only about 15 percent of UCers are helped by antibiotics but I wonder if those of us who experienced night sweats in a UC flare are the same people who could be helped by antibiotics.

Yes I have had night sweats. But if I am honest, I always assume the night sweats were related to perimenopause/hormonal cycles. I never linked them to UC, but now I wonder...

If antibiotics only work while we're taking them, I just wonder are they knocking back but not getting rid of problematic bacteria.

I don't get night sweats. The only time I had them was after giving birth.

So many people helped, at least temporarily by these TB anti-biotics. Looking forward to getting on a drug trial when they finally get round to them for UC. Trying to remain optimistic that we'll have better treatment options in a decade or so.
