Food for thought.
Spinach seems to be the worst offender.
Who knows might even tie in with why vegans get UC.
Perhaps best to stay away from bagged greens.

So I should only eat frozen or canned (yuk) spinach?
How do I know the frozen spinach was processed cleanly?
The article also said that salmonella can be systemic, infiltrating by the roots not just the leaves.
A wonder I'm not already dead since I try to eat spinach every other day, cooking it from fresh bagged organic from supermarket. Tried growing spinach but just won't happen for me.

i remember several years ago many people died in Germany after eating bagged salad which had some unknown bug, but as far as i remember, it was not salmonella. I think that in our case it is much safer to eat only cooked vegetables, i'd never eat salad in any form. Before i eat fresh fruit, i always soak it in water with apple vinegar. Can u believe that Argentinians soak vegetables in bleach? I once had a Spanish teacher from Argentina and i was shocked when i once saw that she was putting her salad into the water with Ace, a popular bleach. When i was in Buenos several yrs ago, people told me it is a common practice in Argentina. I often spy on the Latin American uc forum where i speak with one teenage boy who always soaks vegetables and meat in bleach before cooking it. I'm trying to discourage him from it but i think that he thinks i am an uncivilized East European who knows nothing about
real hygiene :)

what exactly are they concerned with Ewa ? are there worse pathogens in that part of the world ? i would think more industrialized countries like the US would have greater issues - are european countries less sanitary ? Bleach ! sheesh !!
i refrain from buying bagged stuff - it's like a cesspool sauna in those things !

imagardner,
Bagged spinach is no risk as long as you cook it. The heat will kill Salmonella and E coli too.

soy, i think it's more the matter of some weird tradition which i cannot explain because Argentina is really safe. It is exactly there where my remission started and i was eating everything avoiding only vegetables, but much more because of fear of that bleach than bugs :)

I always like to buy fresh lettuce. My supermarket did not have any fresh lettuce in stock the other day and so against my better judgement I bought a small bag of it, then, as if that is not enough, I forgot about
it!! ....a couple of days later I fancied some but noticed it looked a little limp! I have no idea why but I put that limp lettuce in my sandwich and was very ill most of the night.. I do believe it was the lettuce..my own fault of course.
