I had a uterine fibroid removed at age 46, also peri-menopause and cannot now remember the exact fibroid size but my gyn surgeon said it was not small. It was outpatient surgery like a colonoscopy. It took me going to 5 gyn's before last gyn ID'd it as the cause of bleeding so heavy I was anemic. Along the way 2 gyn's pushed for hysterectomy and I declined.
Def. get a second or even 3rd opinion, all doctors are not the same skillset/mindset. I was flaring badly with UC at the time so don't understand why your gyn thinks that would be a negative to having a fibroidectomy. No I wouldn't wait for full menopause, no guarantee it will get smaller/go away. Start making appointments or search for top rated gyn's, take your medical reports and ask what they would do.
No weight gain in my case, no advice.
Good luck. My fibroid removal made my life so much better, then I "only" had to deal with my UC ha. Wish UC was as easy as getting the fibroid gone.
Good luck.
edit to add:all my friends who had hysterectomies are absolutely happy with them. I just do not opt for surgery unless no other option.
