I've been seeing the medication inside the shell,(just examined two of the pills that came out together) because I poke at the pills, they are cracked but all medication is in there. What works best pentasa to reach further right?

Hmm Asacol HD is supposed to split on an edge and be mostly hollow inside (just a husk remaining). You can try some other variant of mesalamine: lialda, apriso, pentasa, delzicol. I've been on the Mesalamine DR generic and that seems fine.

Pentasa starts to release higher in the small intestine as does apriso....compared to other mesalamines.
Its worth for you to try another mesalamine.

My GI says this is a common question but that the mesalamine gets out and reaches the colon lining even if the capsule shell doesn't crack.
Still, I help it along. I take two capsules three times a day. I use a nail file to scrape a small amount of the coating off one of two capsules, and have learned by trial and error about
how much scraping to just get one to break
open in my intestines.
How much the enteric coating dissolves depends on your guy's pH, and the transit time, so I think the dosage is inherently variable.

I do a similar thing when I'm sick because I've noticed I pass out the tablets (at least half), I crack the tablet coating by hitting it a few times with a mortar and pestle. I also increase my dose of mesalazine during this time as I figure I'm obviously not absorbing the full therapeutic dose anyway and I think it's difficult to overdose on mesalazine.

I had the exact same thing. I told my Ge, he said "some" of the medicine likely got in to my system but it's guesswork of how much. He switched me to Pentasa and I've been doing MUCH better ever since.
