The topic about
prolonged use of Mesalamines resulting in kidney failure prompted me to look at my lab test results from last July. I was prescribed Mezavant in late May and told my family physician that I wanted to start monitoring my kidney & liver functions. She sent me for a blood test to get baseline levels that we can compare annual tests to going forward. When the results came in, I glanced them over and saw nothing was out of range, so I just filed them away.
However, looking at them more closely now...the lab didn't do all the tests!! I scanned a copy of the requisition form to keep so I know all the tests that were ordered. The lab did the tests for ferritin, hematology profile, and AST. They missed:
ALT
GGT
Creatinine/eGFR
Creatinine kinase (CK)
I am choked with the lab but also kicking myself for not looking at the results more closely when they came in. I sure will be doing that from now on. It didn't even occur to me that they could make such a mistake but now it seems obviously easy for something to be missed.
So am I screwed now that I don't have a baseline for comparison???

Did they not do the test or did they forget to print another page or not send the results to the doctor?
Call the doc's office and talk to the assistant or whomever is connected to the doc to do the search for you to find out if they were done, etc.or contact the lab.

It's not so bad not to have your own personal baseline. There are ranges for these tests and if you go out of range they investigate whether or not you started just below or miles under.

Quincy - they did not do the tests. I view the results online.
Thanks London, I was hoping that would be the case.

Ok....so, have the tests again asap. At least that will still be baseline starting now.

As long as you're in-range in subsequent tests than it's fine regardless of whether you have an actual baseline test or not.

"One thing I may suggest --keep track of your Creatinine levels and see if they are increasing over the years (but still in the "normal" range). I did not do that (neither did the docs). After this happened, I went back over a few years of lab results and saw that my Creatinine had been creeping higher (still in normal range)."
