How long does it take for Lialda to start to work?

I was diagnosed with Mild UC 8 years ago. Just in the rectum area and has been managed fine with Canasa suppositories. 4 weeks ago I had a flare like I've not felt before. Scope showed it has now spread half way up my colon. Dr put me on the minimum dose of Lialda ( 2 tabs) . After 4 days it was not getting any better. Now she has doubled the dose to 4 tabs and is saying if this does not work we need to consider Biologics. She does not want to go down the sterioid path because I had a bad reaction to the steriod enema a couple of years back.
Can anyone share how long it took Lialda to give some relief?

You should be on rowasa enema (instead of canasa suppository) and 4 lialda per day. Both are anti-inflammatory mesalamine.

It can take 2-3 weeks to see a response if those medications are strong enough. If those meds aren't strong enough then you might need stronger meds to beat your flare.

What bad reaction did you have to the steroid enema?

You should get a stool test to ensure it's not something else going on, like c diff. I had really fast results with Lialda. There is no schedule that is set in stone. It's different for everyone. If i were you, I'd insist on stool tests before doing anything else. I'd also request mesalamine enemas. You could consider 6mp or imuran before biologics if it came to that, but hopefully it doesn't.

Is there a reason you aren't on Rowasa enemas?

Definitely have stool sampling done.

You should really start a new post/thread. What kind of rectal pain (when pooping, when sitting)? We can get pain from UC inflammation, hemorrhoids, and there's also things like an anal fistula/abscess which can cause pain as well.
