canasa indefinitely

Can you take canasa or the mesamalmine enemas indefinitely? I spoke to my gi dr over the phone and was twlling me that you cant. I thought you can. I was lialda for 2 months went off cause it seemed to give me a flare then eventually got on apriso for a month and got a flare. So now she is saying i cant handle mesamalmines and want to go to an immunomodulator. Canasa seems to help a little so when i me tioned what about the enemas she said they arebt for long term use. That i need to rake a medication by mouth to keep me in remission. Does this make sense?

All mesalamines can be used indefinitely as a maintenence treatment: apriso, lialda, rowasa, canasa, etc. They're 90 percent topical, anti-inflammatory medications that are well yolerated by most.

I would strongly suggest you find a good gasteroenterologist who focuses on IBD patients with UC snd Crohn's disease.

I've used 5ASA (mesalamine) oral and rectal for 28 years. Do I use the enemas nightly...no. The longest nightly was 4 months, and I taper as my butt dictates to maintenance.

You need a new doctor because she's crapping you.
