Hi all, I've been looking through a bunch of old posts regarding this question but couldn't find an exact answer of what I was seeking.

Have those of you on imuran noticed improvement upon three months or so from the I totally starter dose usually of fifty mg? Or did you all notice that it took three months from when you reached your therapeutic dose of say 150mg?

Finally, did you all notice subtle improvements as the months went by before reaching any type of remission? Or did everything kind of all come together at once?

Three months in, you should be at an ideal therapeutic (healing) range of Imuran. It takes 6 weeks for a dose change to be felt with this slow working medication. So if you bumped your dose from 75mgs to 150mgs then expect a 6 week wait until you see an improvement from that change.

I have been taking azathioprine for four weeks now. I started at 150mg. At the same time I have reduced my steroids from 40mgreducing by 5mg every ten days and am at 25mg now. Usually when I reduce my pred my symptoms get worse (I have had blood etc for the last year almost).
I have noticed that I am going less to the toilet and the blood seems to have gone. I never had this on steroids so do wonder whether it is the aza starting to take effect.

I wa told it would be 3 months before I saw an improvement.

Ipoop - Thank you,that is what I was looking for. Good to know it is 6 weeks for a dosage change. Still waiting to see if we've found the dosage at 150.

Martha - Oh wow, I'm surprised you started your taper so quickly. I didn't start mine until 2 months after the starter dose of 50. I'm really glad to hear you're seeing results so quickly! Have you been taking anything in addition to the pred and aza? Or messed with your diet at all?

Hi. Going to take back something that I said in my last post. Maybe the blood hasn't gone as I saw some this morning. I take mezavant 3600mg and am using salofalk enemas and asacol suppositories. These have never got me into remission but I do think they help a little. I had a diabetes scare 6 months ago so have just been healthy eating. I have cut carbs to the minimum and am not eating bread, potatoes, and cakes and biscuits. I have tried gluten and wheat free in the past with no difference seen. My consultant has sent me to dietician so we will see what that brings.

I forgot to say that once I get to 20mg of pred I have to stay on that dose for a while. I suppose all docs have their own protocol like I went straight onto 150mg of aza whereas it seems that others start off on lower doses.

Thank you ipoop. I did not realize this. I need to bump to 150mg which I will do tonight.

Martha - Ah that makes more sense in regards to your Prednisone regimen. I myself can't wait to get off of these darn pills and get my smooth skin and normal eating habits again (by that I mean not hungry 24/7).

I personally would be interested what your dietician has to say. I've noticed a big change when I went to a low fiber diet. I am still too afraid to eat too much as I don't want to disrupt a good thing... But at the same time I would like to know if it is the drug do ally kicking in or if my change in diet has played the major role thus far. Ah this frustrating disease!
