Now, I have the opposite problem: constipation and sometimes normal BMs. However, the pain has reached 8-10 on the pain scale. I usually have it several times a day. It lasts between 0.5 - 1.5 hrs at a time. It seems to happen when my colon is trying to pass stool. My pathology tests and colonoscopy show that I don't have inflammation. My doctor says he doesn't see signs of UC or scarring. I've been to a couple of doctors already but they can't figure out what's causing the agonizing pain. I was thinking it could be some kind of nerve damage. If any one has any ideas or theories about what it could be, I would love to hear your thoughts. I'm still researching and also looking for a gastro who can help me figure this out.
So, in summary, my current symptoms are:
--intense pain on the left and right side of the colon
--constipation (usually)
Any other symptoms at all, including bloating, gas etc? I have intense pain even in remission (in my case it's upper GI problems though like reflux). First of all, constipation can cause intense pain, especially if you unable to pass stool for a while. Have you tried adding some fiber gradually or psyllium seed powder? If you go daily (with complete evacuation) and are not constipated, do you still have pain?
My second thought is that you might have IBS or low grade inflammation that is not visible on any tests. I don't fully believe in IBS because it's a diagnosis of exclusion, but many folks with IBS have constipation and intense pain without other symptoms. It's basically a functional GI issue then and you can treat it with antispasmodics or low doses of SSRI's. It can also be nerve damage from all the meds you've been on to treat UC over the years. I think the nerve damage would be treatable with similar meds they use to treat IBS.
Another option is to test for SIBO (it's a breath test).
When was your pathology tests and colonoscopy? Did they show no inflammation at all?
