That's true, @DBwithUC. Nowadays, alot of trials test variations of a drug, so no matter what, you are getting treated.
After they have checked your eligibility for multiple trials, you can choose which trial you want to proceed with, so you do have a choice.
Again, no harm to see what options you may have.
there are trials that test different doses, but seldom different formulations. some compare different medications.
anyway, those w/o a control group are very likely to be phase-1 where basic safety is the concern. any quality phase-2 will have a control group (usually placebo) or it will not get funded because it is bad science. for my money, unless someone desperately needed an option, I would only consider a phase-3 trial where safe and dose response has been established and the are trying to get the best efficacy numbers. Also, in many cases even when there is a placebo group, after some months the placebo group gets the med, or everyone is offered an extended
open-label study.
