Guess what? I recently went for routine dental hygiene & was found to have inflammation at the site of my 2012 premolar implant. (Rats!!!!) So dentist referred me to an experienced periodontist subspecializing in implants. He did an evaluation & determined that I had progressive bone loss from the 2012 graft, meaning I needed to have surgery to "thoroughly" clean the site & re-graft more bone. While I was getting this procedure done (ugh!) I asked him why it happens even when the patient practices good oral hygiene daily. He replied that he started doing implants in 1985 but dental pros STILL don't know WHY it can happen anyway! (sigh) / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Sorry to hear that Old Hat, I cannot think of much that worries me more than dental work!!

I hope all went well and that you are doing okay.

Thanks so much, Poppie! So far, so good and I have to take antibiotic thru Saturday. Then I return to periodontist next week for check-up. Sherbear's advice in 2012 was a huge help as she had more experience than I with implants at the time. I just have to be glad that things went well for 5 yrs & cross my fingers that this intervention works. (Also that King Colon continues to behave!) / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Yuck to the antibiotics! I hope that doesn't affect you, and that your colon doesn't get upset lol!

It's good all went well, it must have been terribly stressful.

Sorry to hear you go thru this.

Were you ever on prednisone? Are you getting enough calcium and vitamin D? I know these questions must seem obvious since you are a knowledgeable veteran of this forum, but I had to ask.

Thanks, IamCurious. Yes, I was on Pred for 3 mo. in 1993-- no choice at the time 'cause I had needed to take Cipro for a staph infection, which threw me into a severe, nearly blocking, left-sided UC flare. No doubt that was the start of periodontal problems; I had quadrant planing a couple yrs later. RE vit/minerals: calcium tests fine; I have trouble getting above early 30s vit D, but dare not supplement above 1,000 units daily due to bad Rx reaction in 2006. Of course my gastro is concerned about it, but I'm older now and can't run risks to kidneys from supplement toxicity. *** Oh, but you might enjoy this anecdote: periodontist I got referred to has excellent credentials; seems, though, to be a very religious type. While I was in the chair being worked on, he told me his wife got spontaneous remission from 20 yrs with UC after she did good deeds to help a poor family. Since my mouth was full of dental equipment at that point, I could let his remark pass w/o commentary! / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Hi OH - Sorry for your dental issues! My teeth have issues also. I have a number of crowns and I think I am soon to have another.

In regard to the "religious" dentist, to be honest, that seems more like superstition to me. And I would have tried to spit a pointy object at him! smile

I despise dentists and dental work. I married one and I still hate going!

I was evaluated for an implant a few years ago. The oral surgeon said in autoimmune patients and diabetes patients he sees a much higher failure rate. He recommended I not get an implant since it was a back tooth that wasn't visible.

He couldn't really explain why but just said that population seems to have the most issues.

In general my teeth cause me issues even though I have impeccable dental hygiene and take the advice of my at home dentist! I feel like IBD and/or medications impact dental health a lot.

Songlady, you gave me the best laugh of the week RE spitting "a pointy object" at the periodontist, LOL!!!!!!! His remark definitely belongs in the threads new members tend to start or revive when reporting irritating comments people make concerning their DX, which most of us get hit with sooner or later in our IBD careers. *** Interesting about your dentist & hubby, Cupcakespinkgal! I had this procedure done to hopefully ward off failure of the implant-- because both my dentist & the perio say it's doing o.k., but deterioration of the 2012 bone graft nearby would definitely harm it if allowed to progress. I've had many adventures with teeth over the yrs and interventions did help, except for the impacted wisdoms which had to go when I was 20. / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
