My name is Chrystal. I am 26 year old female. I have been having some GI problems that I have not been able to get relief from. After numerous months of just dealing with the problems, I decided it was time to go get a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy showed swelling in my lower instantiates and stomach. Dr. told my mom and fiance it looked like it is either ulcerative colitis or crones disease. He biopsied ares and the results showed that I do NOT have either of those. My GI was kind of at a loss and decided to diagnose me with "Left-Sided Colitis". As of yesterday, 03/20/2017, he has put me on Lialda. I have never heard of left-sided colitis and from what I have researched it seems to be very closely related to ulcerative colitis. I have also read it is supposedly the hardest to deal with due to location. I realized the more stress I m under the more pain I am in.

Does anyone with this have any suggestions? What have you found on the subject? Is there any foods you found staying away from helps? Any information would be much appreciated.

I do Salofalk 2g liquid enemas and I believe they can cover the whole of the left side. Something to consider.

uh, something sounds funky there 13c ..........

what kind of doc did you see ? are you in the US ? do you have a copy of the test results or can you get one ?

what exactly are your symptoms - and don't be afraid to tell us everything - we've heard and seen it all !

If you are in the U.S., I suggest that you consult the Website of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation at: ccfa.org -- where you can read about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of intestinal disorders Crohn's, which can affect the whole digestive tract, and Ulcerative Colitis, which affects the colon. From my own experience I would advise you to ask for copies of any x-ray reports, blood tests, colonoscopy, and biopsy reports. A reputable gastroenterologist should not "guess" that you have left-sided UC (ulcerative colitis) and then put you on Lialda unless you have such symptoms as left-side pain, cramping, diarrhea with mucus and/or blood, and frequent and/or urgent need to use the toilet. Try to stay calm and get more information from this Website and CCFA, and keep notes on your diet in case you have some food allergies that contribute to your discomfort. It's not unusual for persons your age to develop Crohn's or UC, but it is very important to connect with a knowledgeable gastroenterologist who can explain your options for accurate diagnosis and treatment. / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

colitis just means inflammation

since no sign of cell damage that occurs with chronic inflammation, you did not get a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis

the anti-inflammatory med is useful for both acute and chronic

lower left and sigmoid are harder to treat with oral-only, but not impossible

I am in Huntsville AL. I went to one of the "top" GI's in our area. However I am not convinced that he is the top due to me having to demand a colonoscopy. My results said I have sever swelling in three areas. He said he could see where I have spots that are bleeding and oozing.

My symptoms are:

- sever abdominal pain
- bloody stool
- mucus stool
- fever
- nausea
- when my stomach was swollen I couldn't eat meat if i did I threw it up or was in major pain

Have you gotten stool tests to check for pathogenic causes to your symptoms? It's very possible you have an infection that is causing your symptoms, colitis is generally an infection (ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition with cell architecture changes), c diff is a common infection but there are many variations including some parasites. So, I would insist on another stool test, and a wider variety of testing for other possible baddies.

And congrats on not having UC, as many of us will attest to, it's a royal pain in the behind. You likely have something that can clear up with a course of antibiotics, a once and done kinda thing. An infection is a lot more plausible if you have no response to the Lialda.

I just did a stool sample like 3 days ago and everything they ordered came back negative. Blood count is normal as well. Literally they are saying they have no idea what is going on and just stabbing in the dark to try to give me some relief. I had C Div years ago and they said that I would have less stool and more mucus like before. I am kind of at a loss.

C diff tests are prone to false negatives. Always insist on a second stool test.
