I sit next to a woman at work who said she has "mild" colitis. I asked her what meds she was on. She said she is not taking anything. She said her doctor told her it's mild so she doesn't need meds. The only thing she takes is a probiotic.

Does this seem odd to anyone? If you have colitis, shouldn't you be on some sort of maintenance medication?

Not if it's colitis, like a bout from a bug or something. Ulcreative Colitis is chronic. Colitis is not.

Ask her what type of colitis she has as per her actual diagnosis.
Ask her if its ulcerative, crohn's, ischemic, microscopic, antibiotic induced....

If she doesn't know, urge her to get more information, copies of her biopsies results and blood tests. If she says she hasn't had biopsies, she has probably gotten an off-handed comment from the doctor or one that's totally misunderstand by her.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2005 and wasn't on any meds for 10 years. SCD diet kept the 'remission' during that time.

Ok, I will ask her......she did say she had a colonoscopy and had some polyps taken out.

Ok, she was diagnosed 10 years ago with Colitis. She took medicine (she doesn't remember what) but she didn't like it. So, she started taking probiotics. She just went for a colonoscopy and the doctor told her it was very very mild and did not give her anything.

She said all she takes is probiotics.

Still really do not know what she was diagnosed with.

But it does sound like she may have had mild inflammation for 10 years, despite probiotics. The inflammation, for whatever source, is a cancer risk.

She probably does not understand her risk.

The first GI I had said as long as the diet is working, go with it. He had studied the SCD diet and even met with Gottschall. They couldn't figure out how it was working, but it was working for many people. He said if the diet stops working you can then go to meds, but recognized that meds were only masking the symptoms, while the underlying problem could be getting worse (of course the diet could be doing the same).

When I used to have ulcerative colitis I controlled it with a company that made something called Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharides. I took it for 10 years and had no symptoms and the FDA shut the company down because they literally had a thousand testimonials on their website within a couple of years time frame. Mine was one of them. Also, the product was called Molcure. You can't have a product that has the word "cure" in it so the end was inevitable, and the re-starting of my ulcerative colitis began. Long story short--it returned one month after finishing the last pill and for the next 5 years, while not taking any drugs, I just fought through it while not taking any meds. After 4 or 5 months it would return again for a month at a time and that was life from 1997-2006

Your story is amazing. That is so wrong. Unbelievable, but I am not surprised. sad
