Hi all! I'm back again more for some reassurance hopefully than for advice! My 85 year old Mom has UC, diagnosed back in January of 2011. She takes Delzicol and her UC remains under control.
However, almost 2 years ago she was diagnosed with blood clots, two large ones! She had one in her left leg and one in her lung. She has made a full recovery and is still taking Eliquis. She hasn't had a GI appointment in a long time since ours left the area and it took a long time to be referred to another. We saw her new GI today who told us people with UC have a higher risk of blood clots! It all makes more sense to me now. The GI is pleased with how she is doing.
I did forget to ask the GI about my current concern. Mom has to have some dental work done, specifically 3 already loose teeth need pulling. Dentist said it will be like pulling baby teeth, no big deal. But, of course, she must not take the eliquis for a period of time before and after the teeth are pulled. I had a dr. appointment myself this week and we asked my dr. how long she should lay off of eliquis before the teeth pulling. She said a day before and the day of would be fine and to resume taking the eliquis the day after the teeth are pulled.
Should I call the GI and ask if this is the proper amount of time to lay off the eliquis? I don't want her to miss one dose because she has no blood clot issues right now and I don't want that to change. I can't believe I didn't think to to mention this to her GI doctor today.
I would appreciate any comments/opinions. I am her only child and her sole caregiver. I worry about her and do my best to take good care of her. She continues to live alone but I live right beside her and have someone come Monday-Friday while I am at work to help her bathe and feed her lunch.I am thankful she is in as good of health as she is but laying off the eliquis scares me! Thanks!
