Quick Weight Loss ( is it may be colon cancer???)

Dear Members,

I diagnosed with UC pancolitis on Aug'16. Biopsy said nonspecific colitis with No malignancy. Was in remission for 6 months But for last few month I am experiencing occasional intermittent bleeding. As per doctor's suggestion Mesalamine was increased from 2.4 g/day to 3.6 g/day. bleeding is reduced greatly ( very few in one to one and half week)

But for last four months I'm losing weight quickly. In last four (04) month I have lost six (06) kg weight !!!
I have changed my diet according to suggestion from internet. ( avoid milk, high fiber food, oily food, red meat, spice, etc)

What may be reason for my quick weight loss????

Is it a dangerous symptom????

Is it a symptom of colon cancer?????

Can colon cancer may happen so quickly( in only one year) ????

Please share your experience/ suggestion.

Our colorectal cancer odds don't statistically increase until after 8 years with UC.

We can loose weight when we're flaring.

We can loose weight due to our diet and activity levels (calorie intake versus calorie burn). How much are you eating in a day and what are your activity levels (sedentary, mildly or very active)? It's certainly possible your diet is too restrictive. There's no universal UC diet and no absolutes with UC.

I know we can develop an adversion to eating as a response to flares. As it's an easy connect on how much we eat with the pain and frequent bms that will result. Eating = pain later. I'd eat a lot less and have to force myself to eat normal portions.

To ease your mind you can schedule an updated colonoscopy since you are coming up on a year from diagnosis. Generally colon cancer is not fast growing but every case is not the same. If you have any colon cancer in your family that would be a reason to hurry up a new scope.

Your weight loss indicates your gut is not absorbing food like a normal gut does so that is something to work on by talking to your GI and upping or changing RX meds. Inflammation needs to be lowered in other words.

One food I found that makes my gut happy AND increases weight is rice noodles. Regular cooked rice could also work but for some reason rice noodles are much better than regular rice. Give them a try with chicken broth and see if it helps. (I'm currently trying to lose 8 lbs from eating too many yummy rice noodles).

you eliminate a lot of foods from you diet and then ask about reason for weight loss.

examine you calorie intake and be on watch for quick transit times.

colon cancer would be the zebra in this case - look for horses

It is appropriate for you to have a c-scope after one year of diagnosis.
If you are flaring, you should also be on rectal retention enemas as well.

Your weight loss is more likely not enough caloric intake. What is your weight at this time?

What are you eating daily?


what are your symptoms at this point....bms, consistency, frequency, etc?

Try not to over worry....you have made extreme changes in your diet that can be changed again so that you start adding back some weight. It does take time.

Im eating boiled rice, egg, ripe banana (3 pcs),bottle guard, fish/ chicken, Dal( split pulse). Pear juice. 4 litre water. Psyllium husk.

My height is 5 feet 7 inch. Weight was 66 kg. But now with in 4 months it is 60 kg.
Bm twice. Before and after breakfast. Generally no blood. But occasionally some blood one day in two weeks.
Having zinc, folic acid, vitamin b supplementary.

It is possible to experience quick weight loss if/when UC is flaring. Probably you are not yet in complete remission from your most recent flare and eating a cautious diet keeps you from gaining weight for the time being. Do you have a good appetite? If so, that will help you to get back to your usual weight before long. But if you don't feel like eating definitely mention it to your doctor. It sounds like you're progressing toward remission if bms are only twice a day in the morning-- so try not to worry about colon cancer because most people with UC do NOT get it. / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
