Well team, my UC problems will soon be ancient history as tomorrow I'm having a total colectomy as step one of a two-step J-pouch procedure. I'll start the prep soon. Can't believe after four years it's finally happening. I'm both anxious and excited at the same time.

See you on the other side (and quite possibly in the other forum). Thanks to all who offered me help and encouragement in here!

Good luck to you. You do the prep like you would for a regular colonoscopy? I guess I didn't think there was any prep.

You have a good team and support system? How long do they think you'll be down for the count?

After 32 years of this disease and a severly scared colon i have to get off my UC Butt and see another surgeon and start the process of surgery.at 59 yo really shouldn't wait any longer.I hope everything turns out great for u-GOOD LUCK

Ki-wi,

Let us know how it goes. Many of had 3 step surgeries, were as you are skipping a step. When you are comparing some of our stories with yours just remember that you're at step-2 already with a loop ileo.

Ask for your ostomy supply company to send fee samples to your house so you can see what appliance the best. I liked the Coloplast ostomy supplies the best out of everything that I used. Get their accessories as well.

Hope it goes well, and that you love your post-UC life! Are you getting an end ileo or loop ileo? I got an end ileo at surgery 1, and had the j-pouch constructed and connected in surgery 2. That is now common in the UK, although for Americans three ops with a loop ileo still seems normal.

Hi guys, 5 days later and the surgery is behind me. What a roller coaster of a week. I'm still in hospital, and they tell me things are going very well. It took 7.5 hours, done laparascopically. J-pouch has been created and my stoma is apparently very healthy although I am still coming to terms with it. The first 48 hours post surgery were very tough, possibly the hardest of my life. The anaesthesia, IV drugs and shock of the whole experience made for a difficult combination. Thank god for nurses.

I am up and walking around now, off the IV, eating solids and mostly independent aside from oral pain meds. They say I could go home in 2 days, all going well. Overall, I think I probably underestimated what I was getting myself into but I know it was the right decision.

Albannach - I think mine is a End Ileo because I had my colon removed.

Glad to hear things are going well for you with the possibility of going home soon.

Once your home you will feel such relief that this is now all behind you.

I hear it is a tough surgery, but glad it is behind you. Hopefully you'll be home soon and that always makes you feel better. Keep us posted and best wishes.

He is probably getting ready for his takedown within the month. I think he has a loop ileo because he had the J-pouch already created.
