Bad flare up was in remission for 8 years stress has brought it on. I tried prednisone a few weeks ago but was having side effects of mood swings and feeling very agitated got off asap due to the stress still in my life. Wondering if Cortiment ( uceris )delayed release tablets will be any different regarding the side effects.

Symptoms chronic bleeding, urgency and extreme pressure in that area.

4 weeks of Betnesol enemas ( stopped last week )
4 weeks of Pentasa ( 4 a day )
4 weeks of Pentasa suppositories

Do you like Pepsi or Coke? It's the same kind of choice between Cortiment and Uceris oral tablets, they're both very, very similar and should produce nearly identical results, so I'd go based on least cost to you and flip coin if you have to haha. Both are delayed-release budesonide steroids that are 90% topical and only 10% systematic. Prednisone is 100% systematic, and it's that systematic aspect that gives us side effects.

Neither Cortiment or Uceris are 100% free of side effects. Again, they're about 10% systematic and roughly the equivalent of being on about 10-12mgs of oral prednisone regarding side effects. What that means to you is any side effects you encounter will be much milder and less severe than what you'd experience on high dosage of pred. High doses of pred (20-40mgs) gave me night sweat, insomnia, ravenous/insatiable appetite, wild mood swings (angry one moment, crying the next, etc.), rapid heart beat, brain-fog, and various other big things that were crazy annoying. Low doses of Pred gave me acne and a few other littler things comparatively.

All you can do is try and see.

Regarding the Pentasa oral, what is your daily dosage of it? When we're flaring we should be on 4,000mgs a day. If you have the 500mg Pentasa tablets, then that would be 8 tablets a day to achieve the 4,000mg dosage. If you're doing 4 tablets X 500mgs a day then that is only 2,000mgs a day which is fine for maintenance of UC when it is in a remission. However, flare doses are double. Ask your doctor for a dosage increase!

Is your UC limited to your rectum only (i.e., Ulcerative Proctitis)? If it extends further (is Ulcerative Proctosigmoitis, or Pancolitis) then you might want to consider using a Pentasa/Salofalk/Rowasa Enema instead of the Pentasa Suppository. The enemas have a much, much stronger dosage of the active anti-inflammatory mesalamine medication and cover a lot more area than the suppositories do. Ask your gasteroenteroligist about them.

It sounds like you are asking whether Cortiment/Uceris will have fewer side effects than the pred you were taking. The short answer is yes. You can expect far fewer side effects than pred, but everyone reacts to medications differently so you may still have some side effects. That said, I've never heard anyone say Uceris was worse than pred in terms of side effects.

Keep up with your other meds as well.
