Some people have softer teeth than others, allowing cavities to form. I haven't heard people here say they have more cavities but perhaps there is a bacterial connection in the sense of more of the wrong kind of bacteria in our mouths allowing cavities to form.
At the time I was being diagnosed with UC 17 years ago I had to have a lot of dental work done to replace many teeth in poor condition. Connected to UC? Hard to prove.
This from
www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=43098Cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth consume simple sugars, converting them into acid plaque. Acid plaque is different from the periodontal plaque that causes "Gum Disease." The acid plaque produced by these bacteria cause the hard inorganic layers of the enamel and dentin to soften. The softened layers are then dissolved by saliva, leaving a hole (cavity) in the tooth. It goes on to name lactobacillus acidolphilus as a problem bacteria and several others. Isn't this one of the probiotics in yogurt?
Not many cavities for me in 17 years since that episode and I eat sugar but no Lacto acidolphilus or yogurt. Maybe not connected to UC but bacteria rules the world.
