Hey all!
I am new here and newly diagnosed with UC. I have been prescribed Apriso along with Canasa suppositories, and will be beginning the regimen tomorrow.

I am 25 and have been having bloody, mucousy diarrhea (15+ times daily) accompanied by abdominal pain and general tiredness for about 6 months now. In the last 6 months, I have also had 3 pancreatitis flare ups (ongoing issue beginning in 2012) 2 of which required hospitalization and IV only (nothing by mouth) for a week. Doctors have not seemed to have been able to pinpoint the cause of my pancreatitis (gallbladder is fine, I don't drink alcohol, not diabetic, no auto immune disorders). With my recent diagnosis of UC, my GI believes the two are correlated. He believes that as my UC flare up subsides and goes into remission so will my pancreatitis.

My question is, does anyone else suffer from both UC and pancreatitis? Do you find the 2 are connected? During a flare up, will the both flare? Just any general information would be wonderful.

I am so pleased to finally have an answer for my bowel issues, but am hesitant to believe this is an answer to my pancreatitis as well.

Hello & welcome. I am sorry you're having trouble with UC and pancreatitis. I haven't really heard of UCers having pancretitis, but I have heard of certain UC drugs causing pancreatitis (6mp/imuran).

Interestingly, look at this abstract:

Basically, it says ruling out UC drugs, gallstones, and alcohol as the cause, imaging to confirm it's unrelated to an IBD flare, would probably lean toward the cause being autoimmune pancreatitis.

In researching my pancreatitis, (mine was drug induced) I did run across info that there is an increased incidence of pancreatitis in those with UC. NSSG is right, it could also be autoimmune. I am so sorry you are dealing with both.

There's increased incidence of pancreatitis with UC patients. Believe that's acute (non-crohnic) attacks though...

How extreme and frequent are the pains?

According to the doctors, I have acute pancreatitis. Although, within the last 6 months I have not had a day where my pancreas hasn't caused me pain and discomfort. The times I have been hospitalized have been when the pain is unbearable and incapacitating.

Can you risk going off UC meds, or at least the meds associated with pancreatitis. You aren't the first person in HW who suspected Apriso to be causing pancreatitis.

Since 1989 mesalamine induced pancreatitis has been described . Several mesalamine preparations have been implicated in causing pancreatitis, both orally and via enema, and sulfasalazine. A hypersensitivity mechanism seems to be involved and pancreatitis occurs usually after few days or weeks (short latency).

Since 1980, azathioprine (AZA) and its metabolite 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) were reported to be able to induce pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis is found among people who take Apriso, especially for people who are female, 50-59 old also take medication Humira, and have High blood pressure.

Curious,

Today is the first day taking UC meds. Prior to that, the only medication I had been taking was Prozac for my depression/anxiety.

A bout of pancreatitis (no known cause either) in late 2014 corresponds to the on-set of the first symptoms of UC for me (which at the time were mild, and related to stress, so I ignored them for two years). My GI thinks they're related. Before the UC graduated to frequent bloody diarrhea in September, it caused my liver to become inflamed to the point my entire body was itching and they thought I had autoimmune hepatitis. So, really, I think UC can impact all parts of your digestive system in different ways.
