How extensive is your inflammation? Most people on this forum will suggest adding a mesalamine enema. While nobody necessarily wants to use a rectal medication, they are very effective. There are also other medications within the same drug class as sulfasalazine (5-asa) that you can try before moving on to a stronger class of drug such as colozal or Lialda (brand names).
Some people have luck changing their diets in addition to taking their normal medications. Diets such as the specific carbohydrate diet, low FODMAPS, IBD-AID diet, and paleo or paleo AIP diet all have some small studies showing their effectiveness in reducing symptoms. Unfortunately, the studies are very small and we can't draw any concrete conclusions from them but some people have success. Also, you can google "VSL #3" or "E-Coli nissle" and find some interesting studies showing their effectiveness in UC when used alone, or in combination with other medications. E-Coli nissle is not available in the US. VSL #3 can be gotten over the counter from a pharmacist. I can't remember which combinations of these probiotics/meds were most effective off the top of my head so you'd have to research.
I have inserted a link below that has a lot of information on diet, supplements, and probiotics if you are interested.
