Could this be a flare?

Diagnosed in 1998 with UC. Have had approx 10-12 flares with Prednisone always getting me back under control. No maintenance meds as I have a weird relationship with my UC. The only thing I know for sure that usually puts me in a flare is when I try to stop smoking although I have had a few flares while smoking. This time, I’ve been constipated for nearly 2 months now and now I’m at the point to where I have to take a laxative every 4-5 days and I take Miralax every day as well. My flares before consisted of 18-30 BM’s a day but never constipation and I do have blood and mucus with what little does come out. I also do not have the urgency I normally do during a flare. I recently found out I have an 8cm fibroid on outside of uterus and 2 small “flash filling hemiogiomas”(they think they are benign tumors) on my liver. I recently started having a burning sensation in abd and have chills and I’m always tired. If this is a flare, it’s a totally different flare for me or wondering if this fibroid is causing constipation? I am having colonoscopy March 3rd and seeing OB doc feb 13th. With the blood and mucus, I’m thinking it has to be UC related or could something else be going on. Thanks for any input!

I had constipation with blood & mucus on and off for about two years before it turned to a gazillion urgent D's a day for 2 months, which finally got me to the doctor. GI said the constipation w/blood & mucus absolutely was the beginning stages of UC. After the first week and a half of Lialda, the D stopped, but now I go 3-4 days with soft, formed stools 3 times a day, followed by 3-4 days of constipation. The inflammation stops stuff up apparently.

Thank you for the reply. I've been reading that constipation is indeed a symptom but not too common of one at least for me its not (first time in 20 years). I guess I will be calling my GI doc today and try to get appt. Thanks again.

Constipation can be related to UC-inflammation predominantly within the rectum. If there's any doubt, then see your gasteroenterolgist, have some tests done to see if there is actual inflammation present: a FCP stool test, CRP blood test, or preferably endoscopy like a colonoscopy/flexible-sigmoidoscopy.

Rectal inflammation from UC is treated with prescription anti-inflammatory meslamine retention enemas and/or canasa suppositories.

With a miracle, I was able to get an appt with my GI today (usually takes at least 2-4 weeks to get appt). Hopefully he can give me some answers. I do have colonoscopy scheduled for March 3rd. I've never done medicated enemas as I've never needed them but I will try anything at this point. Thank you for the info. Its been awhile (7 years) since my last flare and this one is really out of the norm for me so I'm out of date on all the newer medications and tests they can do now. Thank you for the response and the information to ask my GI dr aboutsmile
