Hi all, I've been on Mercaptopurine/6mp for six months. It's doing well controlling my UC but a few weeks ago I developed painful knees, thighs, elbows and hands. Don't want to stop Mercaptopurine but worried about this joint pain. Anyone else had this on 6mp?? Thanx xxxxx

I've been on 6mp since 2012 and have yet to have a side effect from it.

Joint pains are the top extra-intestinal complication of having a UC. We can have joint pains with or without taking medications. Here's a good writeup about joint pain (an arthritis that can happen at any age) from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America:

Welcome to the wonderful game of "Is it the medication or the UC?"

I've been playing this game a lot lately. It can be difficult to figure out. I suggest keeping a journal of your symptoms and meds and working with your doctor to see if you can experiment with going off your meds for a short period of time, or switching temporarily to something else.

I am on 6mp since 2013 and I do have lots of joint pains. I had joint pains before I started 6mp and I did noticed little more after 6mp. But I am not sure, is it because we do get other inflammatory issues along with UC or 6mp? Also I was on prednisone for a year before starting 6mp so it could be prednisone. who knows?

6mp is keeping me in remission after a year long flare so I just keep taking it.
