Salofalk - granules or enema

What are you experiencing?

Around 5% of UC patients have to discontinue salofalk/lialda/asacol due to an intolerance or allergy of the active ingredient of mesalamine. Those experiencing the aforementioned problem will experience what's known as a "dramatic" worsening of his/her UC symptoms (like going from 2-bms a day without urgency, to diarrhea 6-8 times a day with extreme urgency). It's medicine-induced, mesalamine is 90% topical, and is flushed from our bodies in 36-48 hours and you should recover promptly if that is indeed the cause. Easy to test, discontinue your mesalamine for 48-hours and see if your symptoms get dramatically better without it. Let your gasterenterolgist know and he/she can suggest other medications that are mesalamine-free.
