what drugs was she on initially and what all is she on now ?

Nausea can be a symptom of UC for some of us. Some of us take anti-nausea medications to treat it. Certainly mention this to her doctor, and inquire.

We can loose weight rapidly during flares, especially when we barely eat (I get it though as input = painful output). I lost 17 pounds in about 3 weeks time, during the worst of my flares. Loosing about 20 pounds during a severe flare is actually about average for a UC patient. I'd try to get her to eat smaller, healthy snacks throughout the day as she needs nutrients. Consider ensure drinks. Especially for adolescents who are still growing, nutrients are especially important. Broths and soups are easier to manage. Simple meals of non-spiced chicken and potato are generally well tolerated during flares.

Certainly, continue exploring the right combination of medications and doses to treat her flare. If it's been 3-weeks or more without improvement then it's time to try additional medications and stronger dosages to treat her UC flareup. There's a lot of trial-and-error in treating UC, as we all respond so very differently to treatments. There's nothing that universally works for all of us.

For me, when I am flaring badly, the thing that causes me to throw up is the pain associated with a BM. The prednisone should help stop the flare, and therefore the pain (and vomiting). It will likely increase her appetite a lot after a week or so.
It can be hard to get off prednisone if you don't have some maintenance meds (like mesalamine or azathioprine for example) to fall back on.

So sorry to hear about what your daughter is going through.

Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory that works for most people.

U.C. is NOT a progressive disease (unlike MS for example), it is a flare/remission disease. Keep in mind that the vast majority of U.C. sufferers have a good outcome in the end. It can just be rough getting there and finding what works.

I'm sure this is hard on you emotionally. Try to stay strong and positive for her, and let her know she will be OK even though things seem bleak now.

Mesalamine made me sooo nauseous for a the first two weeks. If she takes it in the morning, she might want to try taking it at night with a banana. I found that doing that made the nausea go away (also I probably slept through it). Didn't help with the migraines, though...

A small percentage of us (about 5%) have an allergic-reaction, known as an intolerance, to mesalamine (the active ingredient in Canasa and the oral Lialda/asacol pills). It's described as a "dramatic worsening of UC symptoms," where you might go from 1-2bms a day without urgency to 6-8 diarrheas a day with extreme urgency. Odds are low, but something to keep on the backburner, just in case.

I have definitely had vomiting with my most recent and current flare. It usually occurs when I am already in the restroom and experiencing some intense pain associated with a bm. It's decreased as some of my meds have kicked in, but is something I have definitely battled with. I was on prednisone several months ago, and unfortunately it didn't seem to occur any less while I was on prednisone. However, I just didn't really respond to prednisone with this flare either. Sorry you and your daughter are going through this. I can't imagine having to watch one of my children endure this unpleasant and cruel disease. I hope her meds work quickly!
